Thanks to everyone's help on here I'm learning more everyday. These are some pics from my most recent grow. They are all from one brf cake casing. I just wanted to share them and say without the people on this site I wouldn't be successful, thank you all!

perhaps share your method, 1 cake + Coir/verm/gypsum "casing"? Crumbled cake or did you just apply the casing to the cake?
It looks more like you spawned your cake to bulk or applied a bulk substrate like a casing layer.
either way you did something right,.

I used a 50/50 Verm and coir mix for the casing layer. I brought the Verm to field capacity and then mixed in the coir. I crumbled the cake and put it in a Tupperware container with an inch and a half of the casing mix on the top and an inch on the bottom. I crumble my cakes in very big pieces and when I do this casing method I don't let them consolidate, I pull them out of the jars right at 100% so the myc will colonize the casing layer. I've done this 3 times from 3 different ms syringes and have gotten great results!
And thanks everyone for the support! I'm just in the stage now where I'm trying as many new things as I can so I should be making some teks soon for a couple different things I'm working on!

Also I pull the whole thing out of the container once the casing layer is colonized! ( but wouldn't that make it bulk substrate?) this lets evaporation occur more on the sides and pins usually pop up all over the sides about two days after I take it out.

Next time try grating the cakes up into quite small pieces and then evenly mixing them with the substrate(what you're calling a casing)
*casings are non nutritive top layers for bulk substrates*
Also instead of 50/50 I would do something like
325 grams of coir (half of a brick: 650g) 9 cups of water or 2.25 quarts 3 cups of vermiculite or 0.75 quarts
Scale as needed, I would assume the above recipe would work with 2-3 cakes.
That should be field capacity but you may have to adjust by adding verm or water depending on your environment.
You should achieve full colonization in 7-10 days on average and you'll have the needed water for a stellar first flush.
then again your results work so

Here's another one I did the exact same way. They turn out nice every time!
All comments welcome!
P.s. The lighting was weird so some of the cake looks yellowish but I assure you there is no contam!

Im definitely gonna try this out! in the past I've done the exact same thing with hpoo and got similar results. Its basically making a bulk sub but fruiting it like a giant cake. Great job man those cubies are kickass.

Average, I'd say around 125 grams wet on the first flushes and about 70grams wet on the second flushes. But I've had them do better than that! I really love this method because it takes little time to do, and I've yet to have bad results from it! And These things out perform cakes 99% of the time, id say.
What might really blow you alls mind is this last one is just Verm below and in top of the finely crumbled cake. No coir or gypsum! And the results were damn near the same!

that's because verm is nutritious to the mycelium and you get better water utilization to support the fruits.

Nice! I was very happy with the results and honestly might start just sticking with straight Verm.
I'm about to do a grow long where I make one of these big cakes but it's going to have about 5 cakes crumbled into it. The thing will be pretty massive when it's all said and done!

Just be careful, when you start working with that much sub contam rates go up. Extra sterility necessary!

not really. can you explain how extra sterility is more sterile then sterility? You don't have to be sterile at all with spawning. You can cough and sneeze right into your spawn and be fine, though I don't suggest it.

Better safe than sorry. In my experience its easier to contam brf when spawning to bulk. May just be my luck, plus i was using horse manure not straight verm, so i guess sterility isn't necessarily necessary in this situation.

How do you prepare the verm? water to verm ration, do you sterilize? I have 4 brf jars about 95% colonized and want to try this out...

I didn't say that you can sterilize it. aim for field capacity.

yeah you can bring it to field capacity (when squeezed hard only 2 or 3 drops should come out) you don't want it wet and sloppy just moist like a wrung out sponge. Pack it into jars and PC or boil it. Then get your cakes put them in a gallon zip-lock bag and break them up into tiny pieces, the smaller the better. (more colonization points and better distribution through sub.) mix the two in a container of your choosing and let the mycelium do the rest. Fruit when 100% colonized.
You can probably get away with pasteurizing straight verm, its pretty contam resistant on its own.

Sorry i should have been more specific, cover the container you mix the verm and crumbled cakes in with foil and poke a couple holes in it with a toothpick and leave it in a draft free area around 76-80 degrees to colonize. Should take 7-10 days depending on spawn/sub ratio.

Would adding brf help with nutrients? I've read that breaking up cakes will not be as good due to nutrient loss.

I wouldn't add brf, also I'm not sure what you mean by nutrient loss? If anything mix the verm with some coir and/or horse manure if available. But the OP of this thread seems to of had pretty good results spawning the cakes to just verm.

I've read that also but never had a problem spawning pf cakes to hpoo, or coir which is less nutritious, so i wouldn't worry about it.

Hey dude, I just harvested 150g wet today off a brick using essentially the same method but with four cakes and mixed all up In my records, it has the highest yield/volume of anything I've tried yet. Cakes + coir can be awesome.

Don't add BRF it's highly nutritious it will always lead to contamination if you add it to a bulk substrate unless you're spawning your bulk substrate in a laboratory clean room and leaving it in there.
BRF is borderline too nutritious don't worry about nutrient loss if anything you want to lower the nutrients anyway.

Curious: have you tried this with a cake that's already been fruited once or twice? I'm going to make one from a new cake, and one from a cake going into it's 3rd flush. I know what the results will most likely be, but I'm just curious to see the difference.

I haven't tried it with a used cake but I would assume contamination would be an issue. BUT You might as well try it! You'll want to be as clean as possible and make sure you sterilize the Verm!
Good luck ! And be sure to post you results! I'm very interested in the outcome

how long before you see pins?
I usually start seeing them within a week, depending on genetics it could take up to two! It take a little longer than usual because the mycelium has to colonize the Verm a bit!

Why do you say that?
It's funny, this thread is mostly positive comments and questions. The other thread he made is just getting criticism left and right. Either way, I'm spawning 1 or 2 to trays to test.

that's why. Sterile BRF that touches open air will go bad in a little over 24 hours the mycelium isn't going to get to all of it by then.

Wait were you just saying that about the guy who added more BRF? Or were you saying that about the original tek as well?

Just the BRF guy I think. Straight up vermiculite isn't prone to contamination.

Yeah, as Bodhisatta pointed out earlier, brf is too nutritious and you are much more likely to have contams if you shame to brf because a lot of contam will thrive from it

People will always criticize but I'm lucky enough that the people criticizing my tek are well respected people who only want to help. I don't think everyone understood that my tek was designed for begginners wanting more than just a crappy little cake worth of mushrooms. I personally juse straw and hpoo outdoors but I figured this could help some newer cultivators get bigger yields through the PF tek method. There's obviously better ways to do it but I guaruntee this is the most basic tek to increase your brf cake yelds
