I went back to my spot today.
Hasn't been rain for the past 3 days.
Found some slightly old subs.

I wanna find myself some Weraroa.
They look like a cool species and they are pretty easy to distinguish.
Nice finds

Those weraroa :fonda:

My goal this season is to find some of those, along with some P. makarorae.

Some beautiful mushrooms in this thread, good work everyone!

Found new jackpot spots! Also my first Weraroa's. These are a few next to smallish - medium size Subs. Are there any toxic or non-active mushrooms that look like Weraroa's? Pretty sure these are legit.

Todays finds. [Re: nankamado]
    #19886420 - 04/23/14 03:44 AM (9 years, 11 months ago)

Had a great time hunting in wellington today! Here's a recap for those who are interested

First patch of Subs:

These were being nommed by some little critters so I left 'em to it. Bugs gotta get high, too! Hopefully more will grow after the next rainfall and I'll beat the bugs

Second patch of Subs:

Few cheeky Subs nosing their way out from the grass. there were only a couple here so I didn't pick 'em.

Third patch of Subs:

A couple of paces uphill and I found some more subs, but these had seen better days :frown:. Wasn't sure if they would be legit to chew on so I left them, too. There were a few healthy looking pins scattered around this patch so I'm hopeful more will be on the horizon

Weraroa's:

Weraroa time! This patch was actually huge and spread out over ~100sqm. I kept walking around and every time I thought 'I've hit the edge' I'd stumble across another couple of specimens!

I'm still very new to mushroom gathering / preserving so I have a couple of questions, too:

1)
Is it possible to preserve Weraroa, and if so, how should I dry them to retain most potency? Or could I make a tea and freeze it?

2)
Is it particularly unsafe to even so much as handle toxic shrooms? I was in contact with Leratiomyces ceres and perhaps Galerina patagonica today, (Ate a couple of muesli bars a few hours later, too ). I'm not particularly concerned, I guess you probably have to ingest that crap for it to harm you?

It's actually crazy how closely some toxic lookalikes resemble our trippy friends!! Stay safe everyone :sun:

Blue~

Such nice finds man.
I've heard of frozen tea lasting up to 3 years with minor to no potency loss.
You can handle what ever fungi you want without any problems.
Although due to the dirt they can pick up it's probably best to wash your hands after handling them so you don't get sick.
There can be problems from inhaling the spores shot out of puff balls but that's about it.

Hell you could probably take a small bite and be fine.  I think you would need based off bad information I haven't looked at in a while at least a few full Galerinas before you ran into life threatening amounts.  Wash you hands if you are paranoid, but you don't have to be.  I use taste to i.d mushrooms sometimes.  A bit in the mouth move in around a bit, and spit it out.

Cool, thanks! you guys rock.

I'm going to make a tea from the (roughly) 60 grams 'fresh' Weraroa soon and freeze 90% of it for a later date, while consuming a small dose tonight - to test the waters. Can't find much information about this cool species :frown:

Those last subs look very much like the genetics I have here. With the nipple on top, very cool!

No, it isn't my photo and no, I don't think it is New Zealand. I was simply looking at landscape options.

Seems the northern season is still to really kick off (Auckland etc). I've been looking about but nothing as of yet. New to the area which always sucks finding new spots. I could be not looking hard enough tho

Hi,

I'm from europe and this is my first nz mushroom season.

Is the season in full swing yet on south island or does it usually start later ?

Found a few liberty caps earlier i think - will get some pics up in a bit

Here are the pics of the possible liberty caps. Got quite bruised on the walk back.

They have the obvious nipple and darkish gills.

Found on hillside in damp grass with lots of animal dung.

They genuine ?

I wouldn't say full swing, but it certainly has started. Even up here in Auckland
