i'm a big BIG fan of fantasy rpgs in general, but Dragon age Origins has a way of sucking me in and making me truly believe in the character I'm playing for the entire epic 60 hour campaign.
I'm currently TRYING to play Dragon age 2, and I stress trying, because well, it's kind of a huge letdown compared to it's predecessor which I've beaten like 10 times.

Maybe its just me but I didn't get into dragon age origins..... I just stopped playing, I should try and play it again sometime. But it felt very linear and dull... I've played other games like that that kept me playing but I couldn't get into it. I might have to try again though.

you should try it again man! while the story is I guess somewhat linear, it's more or less structured to be that way, and the story itself is just really enjoyable and epic feeling.
the game has really solid dialog.

Yeah. I don't know why that even bothered me at all, taking into consideration that I've played KOTOR and plenty of other games that are like that too. So I really don't know why I even mentioned it being linear... Maybe it was the opposite of what this thread reads.. and I didn't feel immersed in the game at all. I will give it another go around sometime in the future though.

Fallout 3. Played that for days until my PS3 couldn't run it without lagging & locking up every 5 minutes.
Journey looks pretty immersive, but I haven't played it yet.

Only play bethesda games when you have modded them you get 10 fps and mod them some more to fix that..
-------------------- And thus begins the reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

I also love Kotor, I personally enjoy that type of combat. Dragon Age 2 feels so unrealistic and over the top combat wise.

Meh... Dragon Age was okay. It was fun for my first playthrough... then the completely linear story with limited enemies bore the shit out of me. The combat wasn't impressive enough to warrant multiple playthroughs.
I think Dragons Dogma was really immersive as far as fantasy RPG go. I mean shit, the game starts off with a dragon ripping out your heart, doesn't get more like holy shit then that for a start of a game
Not to mention Dragons Dogma has the best combat I've played (I liked it more than Dark Souls)

lol I actually didn't like Dragon's Dogma, the story felt so bland personally.
different people like different things I suppose.

I'd also say gta 4 and 5. I haven't played much of 5 at all but the way it starts off drew me in.

Can't wait for GTAV to hit PC. Played through it on my Xbox 360.
It's gonna look gorgeous and the mods are gonna be retarded good.

If you have steam I highly suggest you download Estrange: Act 1. It's a free to play mod for Half Life 2 that's incredibly immersive for a indie title.
Then there is Master Reboot, which is absolutely stunning. The atmosphere is so dense and the premise is unique, it really pulls you in.

Bioshock 1 was amazing, Bioshock Infinite was also excellent. Bioshock 2 was a huge letdown.
If you have a console, you should check out Red Dead Redemption, amazing game.
Also by Rockstar, LA Noir is a fantastic immersive game-- when I first heard about it I thought it'd be lame but they really managed to do a great job of making a game of investigation/interrogation.
All the batman arkham games are fantastic as well-- some of my favorites.
Being a fan of Valve games, you've played portal 1 and 2, correct? Those games are some of the most immersive-- they manage to be very morbid and darkly humorous without you even realizing at first.. all bleach white walls and monotone robot voices.
