oh balls.  i uploaded the wrong image and then didn't cotton to what i did have.  i wanted to bring attention to the conjugated ring system that has some distinct absorbtion peaks in THIS image:



i apologize for any confusion.  i am not good at chromatography nor at explaining it other than for the most basic of explanations.
you run/drip a volume of solvent through a column on/in which your sample is placed and then different bits of it move through the column at different paces depending on several factors, namely the matrix or what the column is packed with and the solvents, which you play with in terms of polarity to get things to move into discreet bands in your column which you then catch fractionally as they drip out the other end and then analyze using other methodes.  or at least thats my understanding.  lets have a pro give us a real-life lecture.
