Games that are immersive from the get-go

I just finished replaying Half Life 2 and the two episodes that came after it. I was worried about whether or not it would hold up since HL2 was released nearly ten years ago, and I haven't played it in at least 5 or 6 years. But as soon as I started the game up and saw this (HL 2 intro) I was hooked.
I don't think I've ever been as completely immersed in a game as much as with Half Life 2.
I really like how the game unfolds without a break in the narrative. There are no cut scenes or menus to navigate in between levels. It's just one continuous experience with the story unfolding in real time. That added to the creepy G-Man with his intimations of ineffable mysteries, the vibe of being in a world on the verge of being taken over by an alien race, and a perfect balance of difficulty and puzzles all made it a very solid and fun gaming experience.
I'm wondering where to go from here. I've heard the Bioshock games are moody and immersive, maybe I should check those out. I was playing through Borderlands 2 and then Mass Effect but I feel like in those games that I get too bogged down in endless item/ability management. That kind of stuff tends to take me out of it... which sucks because those are both beautiful and well made games.

If you haven't played Bioshock I would recommend it. I still geek over fallout 3 and the 50s styling and music.

I liked Bioshock infinite a lot. I'm half way through the last of us, it's awesome, great deep story. These are my sort of games. I prefer them to GTA's. Heavy rain seemed good but i never got round to finishing it, not because it was bad. God of war series have good action but they're on PS3.

I played it with family but ended up doing the start twice and never got back to it. It's more like an interactive movie.

Hotline Miami. It sucked me in from the very beginning. Though it is a very different game from HL2 and the others mentioned, the game has atmosphere. I'm finding these days, for me in gaming, atmosphere is one of the best things about a game. If it has atmosphere, it has a leg up on most other games out there. It's like an indescribable feeling that is felt while playing, that is not actually stated out loud by the game but implied by it. Basically like good music, it speaks an emotion that is impossible to put into words, it just speaks for itself.

you can build a pretty sweet gaming rig for less then 2 grand, but 2 grand would def put you into the land of 'ultra on every game out, and not upgrading for a few years for sure'. I dropped 1450 on my gaming rid back in march and it pwns nublets. I have a nvidia gtx680 as my vid, x128GB SSD + 2 TB for hard drive space, i7 3820 overclocked @ 4.4ghz, 16GB of 1866 gaming ram that I suddenly cant remember the model name (its corsair brand i believe though), sexy case with 240mm waterblock for a self contained water block CPU cooler. DVD burner/reader/normal stuff like gaming mouse and gaming keyboard, gigabyte motherboard (I like gigabyte)
oh, and a warrenty for everything because I had cyberpowerpc 'build' it for me. I just waited for them to have an uber sale like they are now for new years, then went through their various different systems and customized it with the best parts for the cheapest price. I found a lot of loop holes in their configurator like they wouol have 2 advertised systems for different prices right, one has a weaker vid card and different case and is like 200 bucks cheper then another, but you can configure it and make it have rthe SAME parts as the more expensive one, but still be 100 bucks cheaper.
So you have to be picky with their site, digging through and customizing a few various sale systems they are running to see which one gives you the screaming deal.

Ah yes half life 2... best game ever. The atmosphere was great. (If you didnt already, get yourself the "episode 1" and 2 add-on, and "project black mesa", a remake of the original half life)
And Metro 2033 and Metro last night (all though nowhere as "perfect" as HL2) have the same kind of vibe too it. You'll probably enjoy those.

I have to chime in, if you play online games, or sandbox type games, give eve a shot!...I got into it from day one. Its hard to learn, and a lot of people give up. Its worth the effort tho and will suck you in and make you forget about rl if you are not carefull!

Horror games are the most consistently immersive games out there. If you're in to them I suggest checking out Amnesia, Dead Space (they progressively get become more about action has the series goes on), Doom 3, and Outlast.

I'm playing Metro: Last light right now and it is amazing for its horror immersion. They love to put me in dark dank radiation soaked tunnels with crazy monster noises sskurring and running in tunnels around and above you, and REALLY make it build before they jump out and attack you. Gah! I've jumped out of my computer chair a few times.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent.
Play it in the dark by yourself with headphones. Scariest fucking game ever. About halfway through you kinda get used to it and it just turns into a puzzle game, but man...when you're first getting your bearings you will be psychologically terrified.

The obvious have been said. I think bioshock (especially infinite) does a good job at it. And mass effect is practically like playing an incredibly good in depth sci fi film. The fable series drew me in quite a bit (haven't played the third and don't really plan to)

Yeah I have such great memories of Fable 1. I didn't play 2, but 3 was really boring for me, it just felt way too easy.
I've been playing Spelunky a lot lately. It reminds me of a platformer crossed with poker. Every time you play you learn something new for your next playthrough. Although the difficulty is brutal, it controls so well and is so satisfying I never get truly frustrated at it.

Fallout 3 does an amazon job of drawing you in from the get go simply because you literally start from birth. I thought that was really cool. So I felt I should mention it :p

i'm a big BIG fan of fantasy rpgs in general, but Dragon age Origins has a way of sucking me in and making me truly believe in the character I'm playing for the entire epic 60 hour campaign.
I'm currently TRYING to play Dragon age 2, and I stress trying, because well, it's kind of a huge letdown compared to it's predecessor which I've beaten like 10 times.

Maybe its just me but I didn't get into dragon age origins..... I just stopped playing, I should try and play it again sometime. But it felt very linear and dull... I've played other games like that that kept me playing but I couldn't get into it. I might have to try again though.

you should try it again man! while the story is I guess somewhat linear, it's more or less structured to be that way, and the story itself is just really enjoyable and epic feeling.
the game has really solid dialog.

Yeah. I don't know why that even bothered me at all, taking into consideration that I've played KOTOR and plenty of other games that are like that too. So I really don't know why I even mentioned it being linear... Maybe it was the opposite of what this thread reads.. and I didn't feel immersed in the game at all. I will give it another go around sometime in the future though.

Fallout 3. Played that for days until my PS3 couldn't run it without lagging & locking up every 5 minutes.
Journey looks pretty immersive, but I haven't played it yet.

Only play bethesda games when you have modded them you get 10 fps and mod them some more to fix that..
-------------------- And thus begins the reverse-fusing of our one-dimentional understanding, and adds ever-expanding perspectives, in depth and number; splitting our perception, and in so doing, seemingly irrationally, creates yet more one-ness, with all that ever was, is and will ever be, streching across the infinite, inunderstood concept of everything, percievable and not.

I also love Kotor, I personally enjoy that type of combat. Dragon Age 2 feels so unrealistic and over the top combat wise.

I'm currently TRYING to play Dragon age 2, and I stress trying, because well, it's kind of a huge letdown compared to it's predecessor which I've beaten like 10 times.
Meh... Dragon Age was okay. It was fun for my first playthrough... then the completely linear story with limited enemies bore the shit out of me. The combat wasn't impressive enough to warrant multiple playthroughs.
I think Dragons Dogma was really immersive as far as fantasy RPG go. I mean shit, the game starts off with a dragon ripping out your heart, doesn't get more like holy shit then that for a start of a game
Not to mention Dragons Dogma has the best combat I've played (I liked it more than Dark Souls)

lol I actually didn't like Dragon's Dogma, the story felt so bland personally.
different people like different things I suppose.

I'd also say gta 4 and 5. I haven't played much of 5 at all but the way it starts off drew me in.

Can't wait for GTAV to hit PC. Played through it on my Xbox 360.
It's gonna look gorgeous and the mods are gonna be retarded good.

If you have steam I highly suggest you download Estrange: Act 1. It's a free to play mod for Half Life 2 that's incredibly immersive for a indie title.
Then there is Master Reboot, which is absolutely stunning. The atmosphere is so dense and the premise is unique, it really pulls you in.

Bioshock 1 was amazing, Bioshock Infinite was also excellent. Bioshock 2 was a huge letdown.
If you have a console, you should check out Red Dead Redemption, amazing game.
Also by Rockstar, LA Noir is a fantastic immersive game-- when I first heard about it I thought it'd be lame but they really managed to do a great job of making a game of investigation/interrogation.
All the batman arkham games are fantastic as well-- some of my favorites.
Being a fan of Valve games, you've played portal 1 and 2, correct? Those games are some of the most immersive-- they manage to be very morbid and darkly humorous without you even realizing at first.. all bleach white walls and monotone robot voices.
