Covering a patio with wood or something.

I have a small cement patio outside my back sliding glass doors. I'd like to cover it. Nothing too expensive but maybe that fake wood or whatever. I was wondering what would be the very simplest way to do the job. I have very limited skills so the simpler the better. I won't need railings or anything fancy, just covering the patio itself and no steps.

buy treated 2x4s and lay sleepers over the patio, 16" centers. tapcon or hilti anchor them...then apply your decking material over that.
pretty simple.

That sounds easy enough. This is maybe a dumb question but could I have the deck float on the cement patio without attaching it? Would the weight of it keep it in place? Or could I put in some posts on the edges of the cement to hold it in place? Why might this be a bad idea?

You would have to attach it somehow, it would surely shift somewhat.
Why not have 4 posts with 2x8's or 10's going across to "frame" the joists?

that's why the tapcons/hilti anchors were mentioned, keep the sleepers from moving
Icelander, want cheap and fast, consider staining/etching

Hey that's cool, I have some small cracks in the patio, can I stain and etch over that? Can you link me to something where I can learn about this?

hit youtube for techniques for engraving and etching as well as staining, loads of helpful videos
to determine what you may want to do, color selection and info about the materials including where to find them in your area
http://www.concretenetwork.com/stained-concrete/
concrete really doesnt have to be a boring gray slab

adobe in stain, that sounds good. I don't like things too ornate so I think a single color would work well. Next to it I'll put in a small grape arbor for some shade. Bingo.
Thanks for your help.

no sweat... check the paint department of home depot for klean strip phosphoric prep & etch, about $20/half gal, 2 applications should give you a clean slate to start with, if your patio has iron oxide in the composition then it'll also start the staining process in the color you're looking for... use a sealer to really bring the color out
most stains also run about $20/half gal, that should easily cover 200sqft

Was about 20 years ago I had the (all concrete) front driveway, veranda front and side of the house along with rear patio and various paths done in a process they call stenciling (here in Oz).
There were many patterns to select from and many colors available.
The job only took the guys a few days to complete which I thought was great, instant face lift.
First they lay out a thick cardboard patterned stencil.
Then they mixed up a specially designed mortar, colored it and pressed it into the holes of the stencil.
When dried they pulled up the stencil which left the desired pattern.
Sweep off before applying a sealer using a paint roller.
I don't recall if it was expected to be resealed on a regular basis.
It made a huge improvement to the look of the place.
I hope you find this useful.

another of the stencil techniques involves abrasive blasting, that bottom pic I posted is the result of that technique, there really is a huge variety of things you can do with concrete, sometimes it involves working with the wet stuff to get the desired effect or with toppings on cured concrete but in the last 20 years there's been a lot of developments in the industry

If youre in an area that get real winters, etching, stenciling and abrasion blasting can be a bad idea...the freeze thaw cycle accelerates pop out and spall. Ive even seen some very nice looking stamped concrete develop minor problems because of heavy icing.

A while back I covered over a tiled verandah with premade merbau decking tiles?. They lock together with plastic clips.
http://www.northernriverstimber.com.au/decking.php
I know its not American but you get the idea. Right hand side. Half way down.
All you have to do is stain them. Can be laid in a straight line or alternatively.
Very easy. Pretty cheap. Look good. Quick.
Have you considered hiring a concrete grinder to grind the slab down a little bit to expose the aggregate?

I ended up doing the etching and stain thing. I'm very happy with the results and the total cost was about $60 or less.
I used the money I saved to buy patio furniture and build a grape arbor and some raised garden beds.

I see it as a very good idea take some 1x wolmanized or Trex and tie it together using firing strips as long as you are level with the door and square it pretty much cant move. just my 2 cents.

Mine suggestion to you to must cover your patio with wood because it's not too much costly. I am also a patio cover contractor in Dallas area where i have set up a lot of wooden patio covers.. So go with wooden patio covers..
