Gymnopilus Validipes NE Ohio
    #18927224 - 10/03/13 08:38 PM (11 months, 11 days ago)

Habitat: Growing on dead wood, I think a stump. Looked like some kind of hardwood.

Gills: Light yellow, almost white. Veil remnants attached to stem.

Stem: Fiberous, yellow to dark brown, blue/green on some. 1 1/2 in - 4 in long and 1/4 in. - 1 in. thick, solid through it.

Cap: 1/2 in. - 2 1/4 in., convex, yellow/orange - red/brown, spongy, slightly scaily looking but feels smooth, outside of cap is like portabella pellicle when dry. Flesh is yellow/white like the gills.

Spore print color: You decide

Bruising: I'm pretty sure it has some blue/green bruising.

Other information: Smell is sort of sweet and slightly astringent, taste is like normal wild mushrooms but bitter ( and I hope I'm not just saying that because I expect it)

___________

Thanks for any help getting an ID on these, I live in NE Ohio and found them while walking grumpily home from work in the rain. The pictures are not so good because my sister is borrowing my camera, so if you need better ones of anything just let me know and I'll try to get a better one. The blue green on the ones that had it is getting more noticeable so I'm going to take more pics of that and the spoor print soon.

one of the blue green ones

Looks like a Gomphidius species to me. Let's see that spore print and some focused pictures please.

That's a little better. Definitely not Gomphidius! They are Probably a blue bruising Gymnopilus! You should dry and save so e for the user bloodworm, who is researching the genus. He doesn't need much.

It is funny, I was just telling myself to get out gym hunting.. I guess they may have found me :stoned:

So he just needs some spores? I would not feel comfortable sending specimens.

I think I just seen a post where he found some gyms... tis the season

No, he would need well dried specimens in order to record the length and shape of the various types of cystidia, the arrangment of hyphae in the cutis, pileal and lamellar tramas and the subhymenium. If he can get them under a scanning microscope he would need to record the arrangement of the spore ornamentation and the diamater of the suprahilar disc. I don't really see why you would need to be uncomfortable sending research specimens to him. if you are really that concerned, I'm sure you can just send them to the University of Florida in care of his name. But really, you could just send them to him.

I guess I can send a specimen to him if he wants.. I do not want to waste somebody's time by sending them some shroom that ends up being a sulfur tuft though.

I do not want to end up eating some Galerina either...

I found them yesterday, the pins are the only ones that blue and there were only 3 pins.

I'm thinking it is safe to say some type of gym?

So you think the bluing is good enough to say these are active?

Went back, guess I missed some. It was raining and I wanted to get home, I found them in the grass next to the stump growing on a root or fragments of the stump. There is really good blue/green bruising on the pins of these as well!
