Electronic Cigarettes 1

A few people I know have these and i'm wondering if there is any data to validate the claim that they are safe. So far all I've been hearing is anecdotal evidence, with something that is relatively new and unregulated I'm skeptical.
Does anyone here have any insight?

I think there's a methodological problem with establishing they're safe. Since the phenomenon is quite new, reliable data on long-term effects are unavailable, let alone epidemiological data.

the main ingredienct is glycerin (>95%?) which is also part of tobacco (~30% afaik). the other ingredients are nicotine and food safe flavors.
lets just say, it's very unlikely that they're worse than cigarettes. (or even nearly as bad)
cigs = tarring your lungs e-cigs = inhaling vaporized food safe flavors

They're very likely to be significantly safer than cigs. But unlikely to be entirely safe; after all, nicotine is still a poison. Btw, glycerin is not poisonous.

E cigs are useful if you're trying to quit. And you can vape pretty much everywhere so that's pretty sweet too.

damn...i used to smoke L&M's, they definitely weren't what the doctor ordered...
this is a good read: http://www.truthaboutecigs.com/scares.php
my opinion is that the Big Tobacco Companies and Pharmas (nicotine pathces/gum) don't want to lose any customers, so they hype up the bad press on them
there probably are some risks with e-cigs, but compared to cancer sticks...

I got a E-GO t2 Upgrade with a kanger t3s cardomizer. Coffee flavored fluid. I prefer it to smoking. Now that my smell and taste is back CIG smoke is nasty.

Whether they're safe or not, they're absolutely terrible. I had one for about two or three weeks and the damned thing gave me a respiratory infection.

I do not know with 100% accuracy that they were the cause of the infection. Also, I don't want it to seem like I'm saying "E-cigs give you respiratory infections."
All I'm saying is I didn't enjoy the experience. Every time I "smoked" it, it made my throat burn and it continued to get worse until I threw it away. I'm sure if I spent more than $3 on it, It wouldn't have been so bad.
If you like 'em, good for you. I don't like mustard either, but to each their own.

i think people with lousy lungs from smoking a long time have issues with them, my mom can hardly use an e-cig, it throws her into a coughing fit
i also find although i cough a lot less with them, the type of cough is different, its alot harder to bring up and feels more annoying/weird

That probably has more to do with the juice than anything else. propylene glycol can cause your mouth and throat to get dry until you get used to it. Drinking more fluids is recommended. Also, some of the flavorings can cause you to cough more. I have one flavor that makes me cough. None of the other 15-20 flavors I have tried do that to me. Not to mention the crap your lungs try and bring up after you quite smoking.
