***Official Indiana Mushroom Season 2014***
    #18518919 - 07/06/13 02:06 AM (10 years, 8 months ago)

I know it's a little late in the season to be starting this thread, but since i couldn't find any Indiana season threads I figured us Hoosiers needed our own. This thread is meant for Indiana (and surrounding states) Shroomerites to gather and share information on ALL active, non active, toxic, edible, and/or non edible wild fungi growing here in Indiana. Very few Hoosiers are even aware that psychoactive mushroom do in fact grow here, let alone have the knowledge to correctly identify them. I am in the process of collaborating various info to make a "Hoosier Psychoactive Hunting Guide" (which will be posted in my sig once I get it finished), but wading through all the info may take some time. I would like to use some of y'alls pics of local finds in the guide, so "Take your best shot!" and maybe your pic will get picked. Feel free to post pics from earlier this season, since morels and pecker heads are already done for the year. Here's a few pics from July 4th:

These were found on a huge oak that fell a few years back. The two forks split opposite directions and extend 80 ft out from the trunk. Both forks are covered in these. Notice how the moss discolored the ones? A truly impressive site, one I will most likely photograph again this weekend.

These were found on and around the trunk of the massive fallen oak. I have no idea what the truffle looking globs are or why they are secreting clear fluid.

These little guys where all over a dead tree that hasn't fallen yet (not sure what kind of tree, will find out this weekend)

Don't know if this is mycelium or what, but it's everywhere in clusters on the dirt

This is some kind of slime mold I think. growing on a old fire log at my abandoned campsite from high school. Place is completely grown over now.

These were found in the yard at my GF's mother's house. The Boletes are the only ones in all these pics that I can truly identify. Oddly, one of them produced gills instead of pores. Tried taking a print, but no spores fell :frown:

So next time you're out in the yard or woods, fishing or hunting, or just out enjoying nature in this beautiful state of ours, keep your eyes peeled and camera ready. You never no when you might stumble on a bit of magic!

I'd say the first group of the bottom 4 groups is gymnopus, the second is psathyrella, the third like you already said are boletaceae of some variety and then #4 is probably Phylloporus rhodoxanthus, the gilled bolete. Cool finds man, way to rep your state!

Cool. Thanks. Any idea on the fan-like ones growing on the oak? Or the first and last in group #2 (the middle two have been ID'd as L. perlatum)?

I'm not great with polypores but I'd say the reddish one is trametes versicolor and the one that is white and green is lenzites betulina. Shots of the other side of each could probably verify that.

Onboard flash + macro = bad times. Unless you can control the output of your flash and set it as low as it will go.

depending on how your camera is laid out, sometimes you can dampen the flash by putting a finger over part of it (like 50% - 75%) and get better results that way.

You can tape a piece of paper over the flash to act as a dampener, or go out and buy a cheap ring flash

Yep, mine is pretty high up so the flash isn't a big deal, but on compact cameras with the flash set beside the lens things get ugly.

Found a few specimens driving around today. Pretty sure the first is "Chicken of the Woods", but no idea what the second is. Polypore for sure. The are hard, not at all like regular fungi flesh.

Gonna take some culture from them.

Those polypor look like a Ganoderma.
Does the pore surface bruise brown?

Impressive haul of COTW dude.

Well, maybe a bit. Went up and asked the home-owner if they minded. Spotted them from 4 blocks away! Told them what I thought the were, and I would let they know once I positively identified them. The lady seemed really suprised they might be edible. I was thinking the second was a form of Reishi due to the coloring. Yes, the white pore areas do bruise brown.

if you cannot consume them all.

I bet that polypore is Ganoderma.

What kind of wood was in the area? It is likely growing from a root
of what is there.

That should point us to a species.

If it is a conifer then it is G. tsugae and if it is a deciduous tree then
it is G. lucidium.

Cleaning the COTW now. Gonna go around to the Asian markets to see if I can sell any, maybe a couple restaurants too. Sliced the Ganoderma to help dry them out. Should have used a saw. Could barely get through them with a serated knife!

Looks like the tree could be some type of "Locust" tree.

There are a few species in different genera that are all called locust.

Looks like you had a great day. :sunny:

Not sure why not.

Im a bit outta my league here. I don't know anything about the trees
in your area or what G. lucidium will not grow on.

It is a deciduous tree.

All I saw where the leaves. Seeds would help. I doubt there are any flowers on it.

If there are that would be good to see. Or you could google the common trees of your area.

Here is a black locust tree.

Probably would be hard to find as an "in your area" tree as it is introduced.

I think....

The last two pic bombs were all taken at a medium sized park in town. I have loved this park for 20 years (since they built a small Native American Museum there when I was in high school) and decided to hold our club forays, and meetings next spring, before I ever set foot in their woods looking for fungi. Just trusted my gut. 95% of today's finds were within 10 yards off the path. That big COTW is 5' off the path!

Pics from today. Went back and harvested those Chics today, and found some more. Checked on my oyster patch and also found the little sister of the Hen I found yesterday, not a foot away from big sis. Guess I was so excited I didn't see it yesterday. Any idea as to the ID of pic 3?

Two trees. The older ones (30 lbs) from today's chick pic, and the nice fresh ones (50 lbs) from the pic yesterday. Just took the ones from around the base of it though. Be out again to harvest over the weekend. Gotta go back out tomorrow to get old L. cinncinatus I found next to the Hens so I can try to get good culture on agar. Gonna clone the L. sulphurus and Aspen Oysters too.

So I went down to my father's house today to pick a bunch of Turkey Tails for a substrate experiment, and to get a few small willow tree logs to spawn with Oyster and Shiitake dowels. When I got to the log piles these are what I found. Guess I don't need to spawn them, they are already full of Oyster myc!

Since I don't have a thread going for them, I'll post the pics here. First are pics of the second flush of my lime pasteurizing straw test. The last ones are of LC test jars of Enoki and Lion's Mane, and of dowels spawned at the same time as the LC.

So a new year has begun and its a cold, snowy bitch! We have been getting a good steady amount of snow and rain this winter. Although it is a pain in the ass, a wet winter means a wet spring. We should have a great spring hunting season, I can't wait! Hope you all had a good holiday season, and for all you Shroomerites in the great white Hoosier State, "Buck up". Spring isn't too far off. Just keep imagining how big the morels will be in a couple months. Have you spread hardwood ash on your morel patches yet? Better get to it.

Yes they are Ganzig. The plate contaminated on me so I'm gonna have to see if I can save some culture to restock on the Pinks. I spawned a bunch of newspaper with the used up straw block, but they aren't colonizing it very well. I took the pans out of my GH because the newspaper blocks were absorbing too much RH and were too wet, but the rest of my house isn't warm enough for good colonization. Damn winter, I'm SO over it. PM me when you get the chance.

I am so ready for the warm up!  This year I am a member of H.M.S.(hoosier mushroom society) and plan on attending all the forays they arrange. The president (?) Of the group is from the town I live in and he said he gets back to the area a few times a year and we are going on a few personal forays.

I have cultivated since 1986, but have never went hunting wilds. This year I am obsessed with learning mushroom hunting skills!

Awesome man. I haven't met with the HMS folks yet, but I'm sure you'll have a blast with them. We started our own club here in Terre Haute as an intermediate location between the Illinois folks (IMA) based out of Chicago, and the HMS folks in the Bloomington area. We concentrate more on the Wabash River regions (hence the name Wabash River Mycological Society), but I'll probably make it over for a couple HMS forays this spring to get to meet some people. I went up to Chicago on Columbus day last year to meet the IMA crew. Their President, Ms. Rebecca Fyffe, and I are birthday twins, same day/year and only a few hours apart. If you're in the Terre Haute area at all this spring, hit me up and we'll go hunting The relatively small City Park our club is based out of has an amazing myco-diversity for such a small area. There are three miles of trails which take you past a restored wetlands, through pine woods, old growth and second growth forest, and a 25 acre State Nature Preserve.

Here's an update on the Phoenix Oyster logs I found last fall. They are Willow logs from a tree that fell at my dad's last year. I just took them off my front porch to soak them in a rain barrel (submerged and weighed down), and I found a surprise! Very active mycelial growth! Scraped off as much as I could to transfer to chips. One of the logs (not pictured) has been chilling in my outdoor sawdust pile. I went to check it and there was a good sized chunk of colonized sawdust underneath. Collected it all to toss in the chip tub with the scrapings, then set the log back down in the sawdust. I put clean wood chips on the ledge to use it as spawn, then I put my 4 SRA blocks on top of the ledge chips to keep the moisture in the chips so they colonize better.

For any of you who are interested in growing mushrooms, but don't want to spend the money on all the things needed for indoor cultivation, This is an easy way to transfer wild mycelium to various substrates to use in outdoor cultivation. With little to no money, or effort.

I want to try that. I searched the net for something like this. I want to collect wild colonized logs and transport them home to grow here.

Easy way to do it. Cut logs off a colonized log in the woods, split them with an axe, and bury them under clean sawdust or wood chips to transfer the myc. Then use that to expand your culture.

Saweet! Looks like I have a new season project  Maybe I can pack a wood maul on the atv and break  large pieces off to split at home. I dont have a gas chainsaw. I have an electric one and an outlet on the atv but Im not sure it can run it properly. I can use the chainsaw to make saw dust and woodchips. I have some two year seasoned wood. About half a cord of maple, oak, sassafrass, apple mixed. I also have a bunch of bark and wood shavings that are the same age sitting outside. The plan is to chop them all into woodchips since my original plan to burn them changed. I will PM you when I get started TY for the info bud!:highfive:

No, I haven't. I'm just learning to like eating mushrooms, and watermelon rind isn't a flavor I would enjoy. They are awesome looking though.

Got a surprise visit from Rebecca Fyffe (the President of the Illinois Mycological Association) today. She and her friend came down from Chicago just to hunt morels with us. Hunted back further into a woods I've been scouting and we found a late patch of Half-Free morels in a 3-5 year old burn site. I had just got done talking about how we missed them this year, as the yellows are in full swing, when we just stumbled across a late woods.

Went to a few other spots after those and found half of today's yellows growing under live maple trees (wtf, right?). The other half we found 18" of the road, 100 yards from where my step-mother found these two monsters yesterday. Great day, all around!

So my gf found the mother-load of of Oysters today on her way to work. I guess the week of hot weather and this week of cold rainy weather tricked them into fruiting. 22 pounds! Way to go baby.

What an awesome cluster of oysters! They look pristine! Usually when I find clusters of this size they are usually eaten up by those little flies and maggots.

So it's been a fruitful week so far Chanterelle hunting. Me and a couple buds have found around 20 lbs between yesterday and today! Found some Cinnabars too, but mostly (by far) Goldens. I'll post pics as soon as I re-up my supporter status and can load pics again.

I'm SO excited! The magic of fungi has struck again, and my favorite little organisms have granted my wishes. During the party at the Aloha Medicinals house in Telluride, Alan Rockefeller and I had a discussion about Corn Smut (Ustilago maydis). After learning more about the fungi, I said out-loud how I wanted to get my hands on some culture to play around with. Went out in my garden today to check on it for the first time after getting home last night and I had my very own ear of smut! I've never had it grow before, but now I have my very own naturalized strain. Harvested spores, both ones drying on foil for agar work and 3 quarts and heavily sporulated water. Two of them went in the freezer for next year and one jar I'm gonna use to inoculated some more ears with.

Here's some pics of local Ganodermas; first three pics are of a G. curtisii, and the rest are G. resinaceum. Going to be demonstrating cloning wild fungi with low-tech cardboard spawning. The last 5 pics are for our local community garden. A few months ago I suggested they build a mulch bed around this stump that fruits Reishi. The myc colonized the surrounding mulch and is now a self-spawned mother-bed, which makes it really easy to "mine" spawn.

I just got asked by Stephen Russell with the Hoosier Mycological Society to be on the state Dept. of Health's committee board to help re-write and re-define the laws in Indiana on the certification process for wild foraged mushrooms! Holy shit! My hobby has now led me to making an actual difference for thousands of Hoosiers who choose foraging as their profession.

While my PC is cooling enough to remove my jars, I wanted to share with y'all how I do my version of "low-tech cloning". It is probably the simplest way to collect wild cultures on the go, and works great for cultivated fungi too. With basic household goods you can clone culture without having to use agar for the initial stage.

This demonstration is done with cardboard and mulch that had been laid down on top of a stump that was known to fruit wild Ganoderma resinaceum. Since Ganoderma fruits have a hard time switching back to active growth, you want to clone already active mycelium and not the conks. The mycelium transferred to the cardboard and chips naturally, but I want more culture. This can be done with any mushrooms, or the stem butts you trim off of your mushrooms. The colonizing one in the last pic is a wild Aspen Oyster culture I did at the beginning of the month.

First, always carry paper lunch sacks and a small roll of masking tape when collecting wild cultures. Collect your culture for cloning, then roll it up tightly in the paper bag before taping it. Soak it in water for a couple minutes, then squeeze out all the excess water before putting it into a labelled ziplock bag. Store it at temps between 70-80F, and after a couple weeks you'll have plenty of good active culture to play around with.

If you plan to use the culture for indoor cultivation, then you'll still need to clean up the culture on agar. But your mycelium will have already switched back to "vegetative growth" and you'll have PLENTY of culture to work with (instead of tossing your sample after taking cuttings from it). A roll of spawn like this is enough to inoculate agar with til the day you die, or the culture does.

If you plan to just use outdoor buckets or grow beds, then you can simply expand your culture like this until you have enough to spawn a bucket of wood chips. To do that shred up your spawn roll into some shredded newspaper in another paper sack and do the same thing with it. Once that is colonized fully you'll have enough to spawn a bucket of wood chips.

These are the Aspen Oyster culture I did a couple weeks ago.

Did a roll of wild P. pulminarius (that I found on a tree while driving to a buddy's house) like this on Sep 17th and by last morning the myc was already growing out the end of the roll. Think that is gonna be a GOOD culture. Did a roll of "Grey Dove" Oysters and one of colonized wood chips from my outdoor P. allenii beds today. The "Grey Dove" Oysters were from a highly contaminated sawdust block I tossed outside a month ago. Looked at it today and it had a decent little cluster growing from it. Washed off the cluster real good before slicing and rolling it. Also sprayed off the allenii chips before rolling them. As far as I know, my allenii beds are the first ones in Indiana. Part of the wild wood-loving psilocybe spawning project I'm doing. Next is azures and Liberty Caps (once I get prints), and the ovoid westward expansion project...

Big Hen haul today!!! Not bad for 45 minutes in the woods. Took longer to walk back and get the wheelbarrow so I could carry them out. Still have to weigh them, but I estimate between 60-80 lbs. Off two trees!!!

The first pic is of the two clusters I posted just over a week ago. My how they have grown! The big one is at least 30 lbs.
