This was my first mushroom hunt with Alonso.
Within minutes of stepping out of the car, I started finding species I had never seen before. Everything in this thread was under oak because the elevation is kind of low here compared to most the places around Xalapa.
Lepiota hemisclera has a very interesting cap surface.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127915
Corticiaceae sensu lato
This crust had a very unusual texture.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127916
Polyporales sensu lato
http://mushroomobserver.org/127917
Xylaria liquidambaris
http://mushroomobserver.org/127918
This species of Xylaria only grows on Liquidambar seed pods.
Lactarius sp.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127920
This was growing under oak and had the smell and taste of maple syrup, with sugar-water like latex. Candy caps are rare in Mexico and I think most of the species in this group are undescribed.
Russula flavida has a mild taste and is edible.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127922
Psilocybe subtropicalis
This was my first time finding this species. It's unusual to find Psilocybe under oak in Mexico. It's pretty common in this place and we found it in several places.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127923
This species has very rhizomorphic mycelium.
Sometimes this strongly bluing species is macroscopically identical to Psilocybe mexicana.
But the spores don't look anything like P. mexicana.
All Psilocybe subtropicalis except for one P. zapotecorum on the right. Note different stem texture and the gills look different.
Amanita pantherina group
Probably an undescribed species, this collection is on its way to Rod Tulloss.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127924
Cyptotrama asprata group
http://mushroomobserver.org/127926
Boletus sp.
A really small bolete, cap diameter was up to 2 cm. The center one has KOH on the cap and the one on the right has KOH on the pores.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127928
An even smaller Boletus species, the cap diameter was up to 15 mm.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127929
Pisolithus arhizus
http://mushroomobserver.org/127930
Amanita jacksonii
http://mushroomobserver.org/127932
Inocybe sp.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127935
Russula sp.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127936
Alonso believes that these are parasitized, causing a funky growth pattern.
Perhaps some kind of interesting chanterelle? Never seen anything like it.
http://mushroomobserver.org/127937
Cantharellus minor
http://mushroomobserver.org/127939
Asterophora lycoperdoides
http://mushroomobserver.org/127934
This is an interesting species which only grows on old Russulas, has false gills and makes its spores on the top of the cap.
Spores 100x
Spores 400x
Spores 1000x, stained with crystal violet, focus stacked with CombineZP
Spores 1000x, with differential interference contrast and focus stacking
Spores 1000x, ten images stacked

Never seen a Lepiota with a funky webbed cap like that. Those panthers are gorgeous. It's a fungal paradise down there!

Yes I made some prints. They are still in Mexico though. I expect I'll come across them when I return in June.

They are ok....But I could have done much better if I wasn't hunting with a bunch of other people. I hate holding up the whole group just so I can get a perfect natural light shot - When I am with others I generally just flash everything so they don't get bored. I'll return to this place in a month with a white umbrella, various reflectors, two external flash units with flash diffusers, etc...

I used to invite tons of people to hunt with me in Mexico, but I don't do that anymore because with the exception of Byrain, no one has ever actually shown up.

Ok, since you can't be there I will take lots of pictures for you.
After we got back from camino viejo we went to Xalapa
It started to rain really hard. We stopped in the city in an area where there was disturbed ground
Psilocybe zapotecorum
http://mushroomobserver.org/127938
Psilocybe caerulescens
http://mushroomobserver.org/127941
Spores 1000x
Not at all coincidentally, there was a lot of Lacrymaria lacrymabunda there

On average, how much do your trips cost? If you don't mind my asking.

Not much. $1000 per month. Most of that is gasoline and the rest is food.

Beautiful shots! The stacked spore pics are always my favorite, very well done. The variety of species you find on your Mexico trips is always impressive, nothing like discovering new species while collecting delicious edibles and psilocybes. Thanks for living the dream and taking pics along the way.

Nice hunt Alan, I'm very interested in your unusual chanterelle like fungus, to me it looks very similar to my collections here. http://mushroomobserver.org/68313?q=1JMfd http://mushroomobserver.org/65141?q=1JMea
Do you have any information about the spores, are they ornamented? is the deposit white or slightly pigmented, maybe pale yellow. If this is at least in the same genus as my collections linked above the spores will be finely verrucose, if that's the case I don't think Christian's suggestion of Cantharellus is right as that genus has smooth spores, the spores from my collection also exhibit an unusual flat area that is reminiscent of a plage as in Galerina, my mentor suggested Cantharellula but I'm not sure about that either.
Oh yeah, hello cactu, I hope everything is going well for you and good to see you here
