K-Mart has the Sunbeam cool mist humidifier, It was $20 and you don't even have to seal the output, 5/8" garden hose fit perfectly in their. My pit bulls have three hoses in the output and it works great. It's fairly quiet and doesn't spill water. My pit bulls put it on a timer so it runs with a fluorescent light for a total of 8 hours a day and they only have to fill it up once a week. The sunbeam rules!

Has anyone ever had success with those cool air humidifiers that just have a HEPA filter, a large wick, a pool of water and a fan?

would hat work?
Is a "Warm mist" humidifier the same principal as a cool mist? can this feature be used to control temperature in teh terrarium as well?

Ok, here is basically what to look for, but you must take into consideration your individual situation and needs. A cool mist humidifier (one that has a spinning disk and comb to create the mist effect), is excellent at moving large amounts of air. But, they can be lacking in humidity output, in some situations it may not produce enough humidity for cakes to pin, etc. There are modifications that can be made to increase humidity and decrease airflow as to not "blow" all the humidity away. These can sometimes be loud, as they tend to vibrate, especially when low on water. An ultrasonic humidifier produces a thick fog, usually more humidity than needed. This usually requires the use of a timing system that only runs the humidifier for only a few minutes. They are very quiet and can come in small packages. The only drawback is excess humidity and lack of airflow due to running them only a short time. A "wick" style humidifier is usually unacceptable. They produce very large amounts of airflow with minimal humidity (for our application). They can also grow contaminants on the wick very easily, and are mostly avoided for this reason. They can usually be loud due to the large fans. A "warm mist" humidifier usually produces temperatures that are not acceptable (too warm). Any one of these can be had for $30 US easily at most "super stores". Edit: forgot warm mist

Damned yanks... those humidifiers cost like ?35 ($50) in the UK, and ultrasonics cost like ?70 ($95)

Well, you must also consider there are more expensive models, but the cheaper, smaller versions usually perform well enough. If you have to pay the equivalent of $50 US for a cool mist type, then damn....
I just bought a new ultrasonic for $29.95, tiny little bugger with excellent output. The best part is I can?t even hear it. Kicked the cool mist to the curb, I still need to build a timer so I can get duration and interval dialed in...
I just realized I was supposed to vote err something... Well, I vote for an ultrasonic if you can work out the timing as to not over-humidify (they will be "too much" in even large applications without the proper timing). If you would rather have excellent air exchange but can tolerate a bit of noise, then a cool mist may be for you (note: even a cool mist can put out more humidity than required, but is less severe as an ultrasonic). The other kinds are useless when compared to these two types of humidifiers. While they may work, the two listed above are the most practical for use in this application.
Isn?t this stuff in the FAQ somewhere?

Enter, I saw those. But do the produce enough humidity? I thought using one of those with a little h2o2 to help keep contams down.
