Magash, sorry to bug you.  I'm new at this if you can't tell :smirk:. I added about an inch 1/2 of small lava rocks (couldn't afford more hydroton) for a total of 4 inches and filled with water to within 1 inch of the top (like your photo).  I sealed the pod with low density weatherstripping foam tape.  I'm using the profile 5500 pump and its putting out alot of bubbles........84% rh!  Can you think of anything I'm doing wrong?

What kind of meter are you using? Sounds like you doing everything right. Do you have any holes in the top for air exchange?

im no expert like magash (the retired grower) but i don't think that foam tape is airtight ie the corner nuts and bolts will pull the corners down and possibly raise the flange along the sides of the pod.get the good rubber window and doortrim sealers.

but thats what i thought the two holes at the top were for? wouldn't the pressure of the airpump force the air exchange out those two little holes?

Ok you need an air tight seal around the edges of the lid BUT you do need 2 holes on the lid or SOMEWHERE on the container to allow for air to get out for gas exchange.

84% aint BAD for a fruiting chamber, it could be worse. Wait a few days too...don't open the chamber for a while...a friend of mine notcied that he put a little too much water and the himidity lowered for a few hours....but the next day it was 100%...so perhaps you just need to wai and see what happens.

Oh and make sure your holes aren't too big, which will contribute to your lowered humidity.

Sorry it took me awhile to reply, I was out of it. I'm using a nice digital meter from a cigar shop.  I think its busted or something because there is ALOT of condensation now and it still reads 85%. I have two half inch holes in the top. The cakes are really fuzzy but no pins. They've been in there for a week with the temp between 74 and 78 degrees.  The mycelium is trying to branch out over the lava rocks.  Whatcha think?

Condesation does not mean humidity....actually a sign that its dropping temp. Why do you think your a/c puts off water? its a giant a dehumidifier...seems to me that condensation is just cooling of humid air..i dont remember scince in school but i think thats how it goes.

Your humidity is fine. The fact that the myc is reaching over the lava rock is a good thing. I get shrooms from the spots that it reaches out on the geolite so it?s a good sign so is the fuzzy cakes. They wouldn?t be fuzzy if the humidity was to low.
Your temps are fine. In another week you can start to trip on the pins not starting but now it?s to early, your doing fine.

Well what I like to do is make the holes to big about an inch. Then I take a screw and put it threw a piece of rubber. Then I mount it in way that I can slide the rubber over the hole to make the hole bigger or smaller. What this does is make it easy to adjust the humidity if I need to. On hot days I make the holes bigger and allow for more airflow on cool days the humidity will drop a little and the temps are down so I make the holes smaller. The humidity picks up and the heat from the light is held in a little longer and makes for perfect temps and RH. Hope that helps.

Thank you very much, Magash.  Love the picture    One more question and I'll leave you alone:  Are small beads of water harmful to the cakes?  Because mine have some condensation on them.

My pod is not air tight, but the humidity seems to stay high. There are two exhaust holes filled with a small amount of cotton on either side.

And it works great. RH never seems to drop below 95, according to the meter. Perhaps this success has to do with the conditions in my room, my climate?

First flush was 15g dry. I just removed the cakes from the dunker today. We'll see how it goes.

Yeah, Bill Hicks was a bright man.  He made people laugh and then think.  We have about same outlook on life.  Kinda grim, logical, but alive.

Anyway, thanks again for all the info.

Here are the pics as promised for the renamed:

"Wally World Pod"

As you can see the pod contains geolite/ hydroton only because I dabbled in a little hydroponics (see below) in my past, but perlite is a suitable substitute available from Wal-mart! My first flush yielded 16g dry from six cakes, and my second flush is coming along stronger than the first, hope to reach an oozy! The pod is locked with wing nuts which provides a secure seal. The base is made from a plant saucer found in the garden section of your local Wal-mart!

*the only mod I will perform in the future is using weatherseal around the edge instead of double sided padded stick tape, only beacuse when you try to lift the cover it sticks a little!

All in all, a nifty little device dwelling in the closet, and I must give credit to Magash for enlightening me to the inner-workings of the pod. Enjoy!
