You must be thinking of Blink 182 or 311. Many Phish songs are complex compositions. Check out You Enjoy Myself or Reba or anything of off The Man who Stepped into Yesterday.

hey, you like whatever you like. I just don't think they're talented, a lot of their songs sound like it could've been written by a grade school teacher. and it's not like I don't appreciate complex compositions, I've been a long time fan of the Flaming lips, sonic youth, Radiohead, etc.
My roomates in college were all into phish so I heard A LOT of it, it was a personal hell for me.

You just displayed your lack of knowledge about music. I don't expect everyone to get phish. Thats why they have bands like DMB and Radio Head. For you non-music folk.
In my experience people like you are close minded about types of music because of social conditioning rather than "taste".

Nuggets has it right. These are 4 guys who are profesionally trained musicians. I mean, Page could be playing concertos for Gods sake. People dont like Phish because they are afraid of liking something that isnt mainstream, afraid of liking what others dont. Personally, I like good musicians, not some stupid punks who play 3 power chords on thier guitars and are praised as revolutionary. Dont get me wrong, some of Phish's stuff is def. got weak lyrics. But listen to the music! Reba, YEM, Tweezer, Ghost, Fluffhead. Phish is sick! Like what you like, not what others tell you to like.

I saw then in Camden for the first time recently, being largely unfamiliar with their music but thought, what the hell, it should be fun. It's really kind of hard to describe, and I've heard plenty, really pretty amazing, and probably much more greatly appreciated live, I'd think. NuggetsTheShaker, you're obviously a fan, what's their background, they seem to incorporate a bunch of influences in there, some pretty intricate stuff.

I also recommend you seek out a copy of the 8/03/03 show and listen to the Ghost. 40 minutes of some of the phunkiest phish I've heard. Then imagine being there in the middle of 70,000 people, with several thousand glowsticks flying through the air, after eating mushrooms for dinner. I have to go change my pants now.

(The fact I was tripping gives no credibility to the argument "dood, phish sux, u have to b on drugs to like that poop." I love going to Phish shows absolutely sober--no drugs, alcohol, or even weed--but I splurged because after all, it was IT man!)

The first time ---- before I heard the ,,,, in the time before I heard them, I expected they'd sort of sound like the Grateful Dead but, like, different, more clean cut. That's how I imagined it. ---- Then I heard it and it sounded like MOR rock, AM radio rock--- like Bread or the Eagles or something. I was kind of shocked by how bad it was! Honestly. 'How could so many people like this bad thing?' I can see a bit of things-you-could-like in most things but it was really horrible.
I heard a live mp3 after that and it sounded about the same except they were always playing really slow guitar solos and being cute.

What Does Phish Sound Like?
According to bassist Mike Gordon, Phish plays "bluegrass, Latin, rock, funk, classical, jazz, calypso, hard-core, and Broadway." Sometimes these styles are employed individually, other times they are fused together. Phish's music is characterized by simple lyrics, sophisticated instrumentals, extensive musical communication, and extended improvisation. Some of Phish's songs conform to conventional concepts of popular music, other songs serve as frameworks for improvisation.
That sums it up pretty good.

You Enjoy Myself is my FAVORITE tune, esp off of "a live one" Trey is a Mean guitar player, as is everyone else in the band to their respective instruments, but they write very complex material, but somehow make it goofy... maybe it's the lyrics? (of which they have someone else write for them)

Phish are shit. and for the record I listen to almost nothing mainstream. People just like them because they can get drugs at their shows. It's pathetic how losers try to hang on to that 70s hippy bullshit. Go hug a tree and mourn the death of Jerry Garcia you fucking losers. People just hang on to the whole hippie "movement" to give them an excuse to do drugs and be a jobless loser.

Phish are not shit. and for the record i've never seen them live or taken drugs listening to their music, honestly. They write more complex rhythms, harmonies and melodies you could even fathom. And I never really listened to the Dead... Even if you do not like their style, it is impossible to ignore their talent and musical abilities.
It's a shame you're so ignorant, or you could actually enjoy music, instead of rip on the culture that happens to be associated with it. btw, what does listening to 'almost nothing mainstream' have anything to do with this? Does that make you more credible that you don't like anything that someone else does?
Nothing personal, but you're making a hell of a first impression.

I just don't understand why their songs have to be like 20 minutes long. Havn't they discovered editing???
There are much better musicians out there btw (strictly instrument playing i mean). And that's really all it takes to create any type of jam band, for the most part I can come up with lyrics to a jam band song, It'll take a couple bowls but I'll get there. I can sing about antelope jumping???

Yea those pics are from IT. Though its hard to capture the beauty of a glow stick war like that in a photo. I remember when it started, this 1 guy just started tossing out arm fulls of glow rings.
soochi, people don't go to Phish shows for their lyrics. They go for the MUSIC. When you have a group of musicians that is so in tune with one another that boundaries are smashed, 20 minutes songs are not uncommon.
One of the main thing that sets apart phish from most bands:
Phish just don't give a fuck. They will play what they want, not what you want. They have never tried to conform or change their style to get played to a broader audience, aka Radio.

the only way to know what Phish really soundlike,
is to see them live while on a hefty dose of mescaline, lsd, or mushrooms.
then you will know the truth, and the truth shall let you Be.
btw their lyrics are ultra-high superfly sell-your-soul genious too...

# 1 Do NOT always go for the 'latest studio album' (Round Room, Farmhouse? Jesus, we're trying to GAIN fans!)
# 2 Radiohead and DMB categorized together? Radiohead runs circles around DMB -AND- PHISH in the studio and structured-creatively. Pink Floyd part 2 to summarize briefly.
# 3 Most Phishheads = Non-Deadheads ... Why do you think both bands toured at the same time this summer, and both had different followings?
# 4 Their songs are 4 minutes to 60 minutes long. BECAUSE they play their 'poppy' type songs standardly, and their structured/composed songs improvisationally. This is the essence of Phish and Jambands in general, and the SOLE reason why people come to hear this music.
I'm done

Someone actually complained about 20-min songs!? I don't know about the rest of you but if i am listening to a good groove I don't want it to end. The longer the better!!! I just recently got into Phish. My favorite song so far is Gumbo. Can any one recomend some of their best cd's. I have "A live one", and a show in Japan (i forget the name).

Ok, post up some lyrics then
"I can't describe the feeling when
I'm in my bed asleep and then I wake up with a vision blurred And all my efforts are detered To reconstruct this image lost
There're certain things my mind must do and even though they're very few The image glistens like a gem
Repairing is not one of them So I'm awake though in my mind The image thats so unrefined is calling to me from the deep and tempting me to fall asleep"

Phish sound like a thousand dancing flamingos when I am ripped. I am not a big fan of the studio albums but I do love them a lot. I mostly listen to live recordings. I am mostly a deadhead so it took me a while to break into the whole phish thing. I used to think of them as some what silly but it sort of lightened me up because its not so serious. Its pretty cool when fishman plays the vacume.

Some of the lyrics are absurdly hilarious.
The music is JAM BAND. I never listen to a band that could play an entire set without stopping in between songs, THAT I DIDN"T LIKE.
I still prefer some vintage Dead from 68/69/73/77. But I have an irrational fixation on the voice, and guitar of Jerry Garcia. RIP

well there's a difference between not liking a band, and not recognizing talent in an instrument or in music.
Phish obviously are talented musicians, and much of their music is highly complex, in melody, harmony and especially in rhythm. Some stuff Trey plays i couldn't even attempt.
You can not like a band, that's perfectly cool-your taste. But to overlook talent in any genre or form is ignorance, or lack of knowledge of skill in musicianship.

'How could so many people like this bad thing?' I can see a bit of things-you-could-like in most things but it was really horrible.
I heard a live mp3 after that and it sounded about the same except they were always playing really slow guitar solos and being cute.
lol dude...
This is why people like Phish

Do you play an instrument? Cause I hate to break it to you but their music really isn't that complex, at all. I don't care for the band much (they're decent) but I can see why it would appeal to some people- I have nothing against the band at all. The music is not complex though.

I think Phish is complex in many respects. For example, that section of "Reba" just posted is a pretty complicated composition, with several parts that come one after the other. Compared to, say, a blues progression it's pretty damned complicated. Phish is a prog band.
Even the stabs of the opening 20-30 seconds are very rhythmically complex. Imagine trying to notate all those upbeats and upbeats of upbeats -- the staff would be all squiggly rests and dots. Try slapping the table along with them, crisply and staccato so you know if you're hitting 'em right. I don't think it's easy. And the best part of it is that its not just flagrant complexity, but fits the passage (in both senses of the term) quite well.
Off the top of my head "It's Ice" illustrates another kind of complexity in the interplay of guitar and bass lines in the opening passage.
Pretty simple, right?
Listen to Trey's comping beginning at about 2:00.
I'll give you that once you get down to it their chord progressions are not always original and can be repetitive. But they do a heck of a lot with them.
Really, tell me that "It's Ice" is an uncomplicated song. Please, I'd like you to count the ways.

Listen to that guitar line beginning at about 3:07 in the above video of "It's Ice." The next MINUTE is composed in dense 16th notes, rarely repeating a single note twice in a row. By no means do I think that a lot of notes necessarily make a song good, but that's complex by any definition I can imagine. I'd also say it's melodic. And good.

Yes that is a good example Roy. Also another song that is very complex but also rythmically and harmonically insightful is The Squirming Coil.

Hey Wildchild, do you ever feel that Yes is Phish's great, uncredited inspiration?
I do. Hell, Trey even talks about Pat Metheny (which is INTERESTING), but I've never read any mention of Yes.

At their best, Phish is an unholy mash-up of Yes and They Might be Giants.

Definitely.
I can hear a lot of Yes influence in certain songs, particularly their earlier stuff.
I was really pulling for The Yes album as the halloween cover, but no go.
