Do you play an instrument? Cause I hate to break it to you but their music really isn't that complex, at all. I don't care for the band much (they're decent) but I can see why it would appeal to some people- I have nothing against the band at all. The music is not complex though.

I think Phish is complex in many respects. For example, that section of "Reba" just posted is a pretty complicated composition, with several parts that come one after the other. Compared to, say, a blues progression it's pretty damned complicated. Phish is a prog band.
Even the stabs of the opening 20-30 seconds are very rhythmically complex. Imagine trying to notate all those upbeats and upbeats of upbeats -- the staff would be all squiggly rests and dots. Try slapping the table along with them, crisply and staccato so you know if you're hitting 'em right. I don't think it's easy. And the best part of it is that its not just flagrant complexity, but fits the passage (in both senses of the term) quite well.
Off the top of my head "It's Ice" illustrates another kind of complexity in the interplay of guitar and bass lines in the opening passage.
Pretty simple, right?
Listen to Trey's comping beginning at about 2:00.
I'll give you that once you get down to it their chord progressions are not always original and can be repetitive. But they do a heck of a lot with them.
Really, tell me that "It's Ice" is an uncomplicated song. Please, I'd like you to count the ways.

Listen to that guitar line beginning at about 3:07 in the above video of "It's Ice." The next MINUTE is composed in dense 16th notes, rarely repeating a single note twice in a row. By no means do I think that a lot of notes necessarily make a song good, but that's complex by any definition I can imagine. I'd also say it's melodic. And good.

Yes that is a good example Roy. Also another song that is very complex but also rythmically and harmonically insightful is The Squirming Coil.

From selfishness to complacency;
From complacency to apathy;
From apathy to dependence;
From dependence back into bondage.

Hey Wildchild, do you ever feel that Yes is Phish's great, uncredited inspiration?
I do. Hell, Trey even talks about Pat Metheny (which is INTERESTING), but I've never read any mention of Yes.

At their best, Phish is an unholy mash-up of Yes and They Might be Giants.

Definitely.
I can hear a lot of Yes influence in certain songs, particularly their earlier stuff.
I was really pulling for The Yes album as the halloween cover, but no go.
