silica gel vs food dehydrator
    #17767093 - 02/08/13 11:58 AM (11 years, 2 months ago)

So all I could find at home depot/lowes was damp rid. and I would rather get something that is re-usable and dries them out completely.

after looking around on the net at silica gel I realized that for a decent amount of the stuff is just barely less than some of the food dehydrators on amazon.

So for something that can be used over and over long term and completely dries out the goods, which am i better off investing in. and are there differences in food dehydrators I should be aware of?

Yeah I am just not sure about the differences in them

I like the looks of this one and It has a fan only or lo setting which I would assume would be sufficient.

http://www.amazon.com/Waring-DHR30-Professional-Dehydrator/dp/B005RRBM8K/ref=sr_1_4?s=home-garden&ie=UTF8&qid=1360350200&sr=1-4&keywords=dehydrators

My main concern is that they vary in price from like $20 all the way to $200+

Not sure why such a huge price range other than size and exact temp control....

But my price range is around $40 - $70  until I can get some money back, been investing a lot in supplies ect lately and im starting to run dry. lol

After reading on here long and hard I just ordered a food dehydrator it came just in time for the first flush to be picked. Worked great I set them on a grate for 12 hours with a fan on them for a pre dry then put them in the dehydrator for around half a day turning it on and off about every 45 mins. I cant speak for damp rid as I tried the other way first. I compared a bunch of them on amazon and they all looked about the same. Hope this helps.

Should have just put them in the dehydrator to start with. 8-10 hours and they'd be dry.

OP, the price difference definitely reflects quality. The cheap $40 ones you can get at Wal-Mart can shit out on you pretty quickly. There are also things to look for like adjustable temperature, fan speed and the ability to hold extra racks.

Just do some reading around and see what you can afford compared to what you need. Reviews on Amazon and places like that usually help me a lot no matter the product.

As for using DampRid, you still have to fan-dry them first, then use the desiccant. If you live in an area with very low RH, you might get away with simply fan drying them for 24-48 hours.

Hit some thrift shops. You can probably pick a couple up for a few bucks. I've had a wal-mart 40 dollar dehydrator for a very long time now and it's never failed me. I also have a couple back ups I picked up at thrift stores for next to nothing.

Get a damprid bucket.
Poke little holes in top.
Put coffee filter inside screen tub in bucket.
Fill it up , put coffee filter over top and replace lid.

After fan drying for 12 hours of course.
I did this for years before my 10 tray RONCO.
also damprid tub works best with damprid only in the bottom under screen tub insert
and you dont need much. im taking 2 tablespoons at a time.

I also noticed a decrease in potency, however slight from the time it takes to fan dry.

The heat is neglagable compared to the time the precious water soluble alkaloids are degrated by taking over 24 hrs to dry IME

I just picked my first shroom yesterday.
I popped it in my dehydrator and it was dry enough to break up with my fingers within 10 hours.
Plus, if your into health, you can dry fruits, herbs and veggies with the dehydrator as well, which is an added bonus.

Here's my model:

I use a nesco as well, the FD-37, I just bought a 2nd one, and it will dry 4 ounces in 12 -14 hours cracker dry.

If you plan on doing this for any amount of time, I suggest you steer away from the desiccants and get a $35-$40 dehydrator, you will not regret it.

And as stated above it can also be used to dry foods, lol.
