Anyone know what this might be?

Long story. Anyone recognize this device or know anything about it?

The police are tracking you.

Or someone is.

Maybe it is your smother?

So, whats the story? Does someone have an interest in knowing where you go?

It is like the GPS that was used in breaking bad, except this one has a cell phone transmitter to transmit the data.

Well yeah... It's obviously cops and it's obviously a transciever of sorts but i was more asking if anyone regognized the device, has any experience with it, might be aware of known exploits in its programming or hardware.

I would definitely agree, looks like a GPS tracker but you can find way more about it if you look up all the specs for the chips on the inside and you might possibly find out who is tracking you if you can dig deep enough.

I'd say not - the main PCB has an open source hardware logo on it, and a website (obscured in the picture).  It looks like some sort of arduino header spacing on the black PCB too, so that may be an arduino shield.

More pics of the internals please, but it looks very home made to me.  It's not the cops tracking you, unless their budget for surveillance is less than my budget for caviar.

This hasn't just turned up on your vehicle has it?

Quick thought - if you're capable of digging into the hardware, just stop it communicating (unplug phone board), rig it up to alarm when moved, then sit and wait for whoever fitted it to come collect it.  They surely will when they see it's not working.

It's definitely not commercial kit though - made by a hobby hacker for sure.

If that is a company/commercial vehicle, then the company may be looking at where it goes. But companies usually install then on the inside, or somewhere safer. The magnet in the fender well may be from someone wanting a quick in and out.

Also, if you are in any type of lawsuit (disability/ workplace injury/ pending divorce ect.), there may be a PI looking at what you are doing.

When you are done with it, you should place it on an over-the-road truck just to fuck with the people that put it on. Or send it by ground mail to a foreign country.

Story of a guy that found one and was scared to shit.

The cops would/should need a warrant, and they would/should be able to hide it much better.

Yeah, looks a bit botched. But someone did make optimal use of existing building blocks. Check out the flat cable used to connect what looks like a satellite receiver to the central piggy-backed connector board. That's not something you buy at radioshack. That was salvaged from some existing piece of equipment, perhaps a satnav unit. The main PCB looks like a micro-cpu experimentation board; I don't recognize this particular one, but there's dozens of them around.

This is the work of a pretty experienced and savvy person. I bet he has made several of these; it doesn't look like a one of a kind device.

My guess is that the vehicle was being tracked by a private eye with tech-savvy friends/contacts.

Does it look like this?
http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/SKYPATROL-Asset-GPS-Tracking-Device-6DXZ7?cm_mmc=CSE:Nextag-_-Fleet%20and%20Vehicle%20Maintenance-_-Automotive%20Interior-_-6DXZ7&srccode=cii_9324560&cpncode=32-218766330-2

Is it your vehicle?
How long have you owned it? It may be left from last owner.
First check to see if the battery still has a charge.
If it is still operational set up some cameras and remove the battery. Or better yet, gut the case and fill it with something else. Dog shit, permanent dye, skunk oil, or just a nasty letter.
When someone shows up to see why it's not working, you will have photos to ID them.
Deal with them as you see fit.

Maybe your life is an episode of Breaking Bad and it's a set prop.

It takes a lot of courage to go out there and radiate your essence.

I know you scared, you should ask us if we scared too.  If you was there, and we just knew you cared too.

I mostly agree.  The ribbon cable is a hangover from whatever has donated the green RF PCB on top.  That IS a commercial RF board, and it's not very phone shaped so I'd guess you're right, that it's a GPS mainboard.

The black PCB has Arduino headers on it (well, it looks like that stupid Arduino offset header nonsense), and the bottom green PCB is just a protoboard for some specific purpose, tying it all toether.

I think it's a one off, botched with what was lying around - if you were making multiples of these and are aware of the Arduino ecosystem, you'd probably use a GPS/GSM shield rather than butcher a phone/GPS.  If it were me it's be on one PCB with a GPS/GSM module, an SD card and some anti-tamper capabilities.  And more LED's .  And an Arduino (for blog cred).

I agree with your thoughts on the maker though - a tech savvy amateur.  If it IS a commercial device, I'm setting up shop tomorrow if that's what I'm competing against!

OP - Is there a SIM in it at all?  Whipping that out and sticking it in a compatible phone might reveal some useful info - SIM's hold previous SMS', phonebook data etc. You might be able to get the # which this thing was reporting to (if it was a live tracker).  I can't see a SIM in it, so it might have been a non-live tracker, to be removed later (a-la breaking bad).  That would explain the positioning of it, easily added/removed to the vehicle.

Oh, and judging by the amount of dirt on it (none) and it's position (wheel arch), it's not been there for long at all...

You could always boobytrap it and put it back.  Fill it with some seriously staining red dye, weaken the casing around the mounting points then mount it solidly to the vehicle.  Let the person who planted it return for it, and catch them, allowing you to say "caught you red handed, yeah!" with a smug look on your face.

Really though, probably best not to booby trap it, in any way.
