Black Staining Polypore? (Meripilus sumstinei)

Habitat:
mixed hardwood forest, right near some stumps. I think they are Oak.
Gills:
white pores
Stem: short stem, attached to cap and together they look like spoons
Cap:
many bracket like caps that looks like spoons, fleshy bracket like chicken of the woods or hen of the woods (I thought this was a hen at first but then checked and it is probably too early in season for them yet)
Spore print color:
whitish
Bruising:
has stained black around the edges overnight
Here's a couple pics:
If this is indeed a black staining polypore, has anyone had experience eating this one? It smells really good, with almost fruity aroma to it. I found a smaller on than in the picture as well, so I have some pretty young, fresh mushrooms if they are black staining polypore. I really love chicken of the woods, and this seems really similar almost...thanks for your input!

"has stained black around the edges overnight" It's called drying.

Well, it happened I think from being bruised to be honest. Plus, the mushrooms is named the Black STAINING polypore. Are you informing me that the mushroom color changes as a result of it drying? and that to refer to it as staining is not correct? Just checking cause I'm not sure.
not sure what the facepalm graphic was for tho...

Heh, just wanted to know how to speak correctly about it. If we were all face palming we wouldn't see any mushrooms on the ground! Or else, we'd end up with spores in our eyes! lol

Dang true! Gotta make use of our peripherals...it's where we get pulled to look at things from!
That's definitely black staining polypore. My dad found like 5 huge bushels of it at a job he's working at and thought it was hen of the woods, I told him it's way too early but we rode out to look at it anyway. He sliced one and we tossed it in the trunk, with intention of at least drying it but we are all leaving for Maine in a few hours so I'll probably just toss it in the woods.
Seems real leathery which makes me think it's too old to cook up nice. It smells kind of like maitake but is definitely not.

freeze it in the freeze before chopping it up , it makes it alot more tender for cutting and cooking
i find it awesome tasting if your freeze it first its so bomb. the too young ones lack the flavor
too young
prefect
tho to be honest your picture looks in even better condition i would say mine was old but fucking awesome there was five bushels of em and i only took one and regretted for life it never grew back like that again only that little one
