Meditation Alteration
    #16989788 - 10/08/12 12:06 PM (1 year, 10 months ago)

so common words..
anyway
I have two meditation techniques I really like
One is focused on breathing
other is focuses on heart "chakra".
on is "beginning middle end"
nr. 2 is "May I... (and so on from I to teacher, brother or sister or something like this (if there is something like that... I like to say may brother (name)) ...
Be well and Happy". "May I be well and happy".
it goes on to someone you know or not know, friend or stranger, then someone who is mad at you, then everyone. "May all being be well and happy"

What I like to know is, how should I choose between the two.
I feel that if I only do the "May I be well and happy.. etc" then I fall into habit with it, and it becomes not so focused, but I think if I alternate between that and "beginning middle end" (focus on breathing and nose tip) then I find better calm and relax and focus (focus very important)

I have this idea, if I do the one that does not feel right, or comes into my head at first, I will be able to avoid boredom and repetitious stupor or dullness.
so if I do the one that does not feel right, I force myself to concentrate more.
or do one in morning, and one in evening, same in morning, same in evening, alternate like that.
should I do like - this one feels good (beginning middle end for example) now, so I do the other one ("May I be well and happy") or should I just say ok I do morning - May I be well and happy example and then evening "beginning middle end".
or maybe only May I be well and happy - I like that one very much - you go from yourself to expand to the whole world - lovely!

maybe start your day with the metta/love meditation

then later in the day do the concentration/breathing meditation

i think consistency is key, so if it were me, i'd do the same routine for both morning and evening practice

i've heard of people starting their days with meditations on loving-kindness and finding this brightens their whole day and improves relationships with people - so i'd pick that one as the morning one, but it's really up to you

I've allowed the flipping of a coin to decide whether I stay or leave a job in the past.

Quite the ally when indecision is ripe.

when you sit down

first do "may-I be well and happy ....."
then after about 5-10 minutes
shift to breathing (insight) meditation

that is standard Burmese style

 who needs foreign mantras when you can create your own.  "where intention goes, energy flows"

who needs any mantras at all - they are something to do until the awareness process is set up, or set up again.

yeah they aren't needed, nothing's really needed when it comes to this kind of stuff... though i think it might make it a bit easier to change a bit of the day when envisioning for a while what it is that could use changing in regards to some of that mental stuff that goes on.

that is why many do the loving-kindness meditation (metta) first.
you get comfortable with your own self and admit that you want to be well and happy. and extend it to your teacher, someone close, someone you are indifferent to and also someone who has been mean to you or just horrible.

at the end of this you have a kind of attitude that is relatively wholesome at the top of your mental stack.

the value of that for meditation is as follows.

when you are distracted, you lose the thread of meditation,
it can take a while to notice,
when you do notice you do not want to react with aggression to yourself
hence the metta warm up.
you gently assess how long the distraction was and from what point it started, using a neutral response, and resume  your meditation

- some distractions are related to intense psychological stress,
possibly psychodrama, work politics, crappy product purchases, whatever, and here again, the metta warm up helps with gently disentangling, seeing the extent of the distraction and resuming the practice.

although it is all very arbitrary, there is nothing arbitrary at all about doing this sequence.
