Do I harvest this?
    #16966864 - 10/04/12 07:21 PM (2 years, 27 days ago)

Veil is breaking away, should I pick this guy now or wait until morning?  However, its so damn short.  Any particular reason the veil is breaking and these haven't grown that tall?  Lack of humidity or moisture from the sub?

This is first flush of my first grow!  Just bumming about the height of these guys.  They are fat, but so short.  Just curious if I wasn't doing something or providing enough of something to these guys.  Or genetics?

Strain is Ecuador.

They do look a little dry. At least I think they do. What's the humidity in there?

ambient is 55%.  I don't have a reading for inside.  I have been misting heavily once in AM and once in PM.

These pics were just taken, I wont mist until tonight before I go to bed.

I'd recommend more misting but less at a time with a bunch of fanning in between

Hell ... wait until morning. At least then you'll get to see what a more mature fruit looks like. The cap will be open more, but will not have dropped its spores. Some prefer to harvest just after the veil breaks and others prefer to wait until the caps open, but BEFORE the spores drop. If you do a search "when to harvest" you'll find all the info you'll need in order to determine when you prefer to harvest.

I'm a big advocate for new growers to wait, watch and see for themselves what happens. Once the caps are wide open it isn't long before the spores drop. MAKE SPORE PRINTS. Don't buy spores for each grow.

I like to mist in the morning, when I get home from work and just before I go to bed.

Ok, waiting until morning!  Hopefully it won't dump before I wake up!

What do you guys do for drying the early ones before the rest of the flush?  Fan dry until its time for the dehydrator with the whole flush?

Pick in the morning, but set the cake in a saucer of water overnight and the fruit will probably double in size.

Are you talking about the whole substrate block??  What's the best way to take it out and what do I use as a saucer??

That's a fantastic idea, I just want to somehow ruin the whole thing.  I assume not to pick anything off the sides, just take the block out as is, put in water, pick in morning, place back in MSG?

RR, how about doing this tonight?

"I wouldn't submerge a bulk substrate mid-flush.  There's too much risk of over-saturation and also of breaking it when you empty the water.

The answer to your question is don't dunk mid flush, but as has been posted many times in the past as well as just above, pour water around the edges of the substrate.  If you don't overdo it, the water will absorb into the substrate overnight.  After 12 hours or so, pour off any excess that hasn't soaked in."
RR

So, slowly pour water around my sub along the walls until it comes up even with the surface?  Let sit overnight and then drain in the morning?

Sounds good.  Just get some water on it.  If it will break to take it out, then simply pour water on top and around the edges.  Small fruits are almost always caused by insufficient substrate moisture.

After a few grows, you'll be able to pick up a tub or substrate/cake etc., and tell by the weight if it's right or needs more moisture.(or less)

I was about to say harvest it till RR chimed in. That's why he has the CC tag. If you don't want to put it in a saucer of water you can jam a plastic straw of water in it and it'll absorb the water from the straw.

You don't want a pool of water sitting for hours, but you can get it wet and allow the substrate to absorb the water.  You can do this with PF cakes as well, what I like to do if my cakes get a bit dry mid flush is to spray water on top of the cake until I see it start to pool slightly and then within a few hours the water will have absorbed into the cake.

I don't know if I would recommend jamming a straw into it. RR had explained to me once before that the hole can cause the substrate to dry even more quickly.

The straw being full of water. Like when you put your thumb over  the top and the pressure hold the water in the straw, like a wine thief. That will rehydrate a cake pretty fast too.
