My experience with a cop tonight * 2
    #16774632 - 09/02/12 03:58 AM (9 months, 12 days ago)

So it was my dad's girlfriend's 50th birthday ... the party was being held at my dad's house, in the backyard.  There was a DJ playing and a live band, and about 70 people showed up.

I went out to the front of the property for a smoke at around 11pm, and two police cars roll in front of the property.  Two cops get out, and I figure since it's my dad's property I should find out what's going on.  So I approach one of the officers getting out of his car and say "Can I help you with something?".  He was instantly rough and tough and started saying "What do you think I'm here for?" and other stuff, all in the rudest manner and tone of voice possible.  I was very nice and pleasant, and he was being an ass, completely.  He said that neighbors two blocks away were complaining about the music.  A reasonable complaint (for a city like Beverly Hills that is not used to parties and is comprised of old rich people) but the cop was just a total POS about it, and for no good reason.  It's not like I approached him in a threatening manner, I was friendly and inquisitive.

He told me to find my dad, so I did, and told my dad what was going on with the cops out front.  So my dad goes out front, and introduces himself to the officer.  My dad moves his hand to shake the officer's hand, and the officer keeps his arms crossed, not budging.  The cop was nicer to my dad than he was to me, but that's not saying a lot.  Apparently the city rules (according to the cop) are that no amplified music can be played after 10pm at any volume.  So my dad agrees to turn off the music, and heads back into the party.

Apparently, according to the valet service that was there (and who witnessed my encounter with the officer, the valet people telling me I should report the officer because of what an ass he was to me especially, and to my dad) the officer who was being an ass made a mention of searching the house.  Completely uncalled for, the report was about a noise complaint, and the officer is talking about searching the house?  It's not like it was a domestic violence dispute report, or a drug-dealing report, it was a noise complaint, in Beverly Hills, an upscale city comprised of mostly older people who are all well off.  It wasn't like the cop was in Downtown LA in the ghetto.  And the officer is talking about searching the house.  WTF.

Anyway, the cops ended up leaving and the DJ turned off his set and the party continued.  But I can't help but think about what an ass the cop was to me and to my dad, and how out of line he was to very friendly people.  I've always defended cops on the Shroomery in the past when people said that cops harass people and cause problems and all that, and the first cop in my life I actually meet turns out to be a complete dick for no reason at all.  It certainly changes my view of cops ... I still think there are probably many good cops out there who do a mostly thankless job and risk dying every day, but a Beverly Hills cop treating the party like it was some illicit underground rave and threatening to search the place?  Ridiculous.

I didn't end up asking my dad to report the cop because I didn't know his name and the officer never told my dad his name, and I would have reported the cop myself if I would have known his name (he probably would have arrested me if I asked, based on his demeanor).

So I think that there must be a whole lot of shitty cops out there with bad attitudes and god complexes, because if there's one there has to be a lot of them.  I no longer will defend cops on the Shroomery like I used to, and will acknowledge that there are cops who probably have a bad rap because of other cops but the ones who are assholes now stand out to me the most and make me pissed off and want to make efforts to take their badges away so they can realize that they don't deserve to "protect the people" if they're going to harass friendly people just having a birthday party.

I'm still enraged over the event, and it's been about two hours since it happened.  I hope that officer gets a good dose of karma in the near future and a wake up call to reality that you can't treat people like that and get away with it.  Somebody has to teach him a lesson, either by reporting him (I'm sure we're not the first people he's treated like shit) or punching him square in the face so that he breaks his nose and bleeds.  He needs to have his badge taken away, and I wish I could have been the one to do it.

some people are just arseholes . i think you approached the situation in the right way and did what was best in the situation. if the police officer had some kind of sand in his vagina then thats his problem. it sounded like he was just trying to throw his weight around a bit.

I agree but IMO the only things that should be against the law are theft violence and rape. Many police I respect highly though and have even told me they think drug laws are unbelievably dumb.

i agree, i think people should be free to do anythign they please as long as it causes no harm or injustice to anyone else. i think drug laws are ridiculous too, but i have to atleast acknowledge that its illegal for now and act accordingly. this is why i think its best to be careful and keep your drugs at home, and not be carrying them out and about.

Some sort of karma is essential for the cops who throw their weight around and have god complexes.  They need to have their badges taken away so they lose their privileges as police officers and are forced to find mediocre day jobs where they make very little money just to survive and are forced to report to (and submit to) managers who are higher up on the food chain and who will fire them without warning if they act out of line so that they can learn that they are not the hot shit they think they are and can learn a lesson in humility.

A noise complaint on a Saturday night (at no later than 11pm) in an upscale city (Beverly Hills, of all places) comprised of mostly 50+ year old people who are successful and rich is hardly, in my opinion, "breaking the law".  It's a simple citation, at best, and even that would be ridiculous for a noise complaint on a private property in such a nice area.  That cop tonight wasn't just "doing his job", he was making sure to ruin everybody's time by making other people feel like shit just because he either has a shitty life and wants to take it out on other innocent, undeserving and friendly people or because he's jealous that my dad worked his ass off, starting with minimum wage jobs and a small apartment and working his way up the ladder through ridiculously hard work to the point of owning his own company and a house in Beverly Hills, or simply because the cop thought he was hot shit and wanted other people to bow down to him and be scared because he could pull any shit he wanted to and have the courts and judges on his side no matter what.

BTW I presented as an "honest and upstanding citizen" and he did the polar opposite of bend over backwards to help me.

Personally I think it's a little too easy to become a cop  Granted I've never tried it I don't know the process but I see the results first hand quite often, read about them even more. Pretttty bad.

I just replied ... that totally sucks, man.  There shouldn't be drug laws, we should have the right to put whatever we want in our bodies in our own homes and carry it on our person if we are out and about so long as we are not under the influence while in a public place

The neighbors across the street are playing Mario Kart very loudly at 2am, and I know this because I just went outside for a smoke and could clearly hear the game from across the street.  If I go inside with my windows shut I can't hear it.  And I'm not going to file a noise complaint, like those idiots did tonight.  If those people two blocks away from my dad's house heard music (ambient rock music was playing on the speakers ... of all music to file a noise complaint about, ambient rock has got to be the most ridiculous) they didn't want to hear, they should have just shut their windows.

Noise complaint lol :crankey:

I got a noise complaint a few weeks ago. It admittedly was too late for a jam session but time gets away from you in the heat of the jam. The cops were fairly nice, the only thing that bothered me was that a neighbor didn't just come over, knock and ask themselves. I suppose they don't have to, but it's nice and what'd I'd do at the very most. Calling the cops :awesome: lol gtfouttahere

That's good that the cops were nice to you.  I wish I would have had a good experience with my first cop encounter in my life so that I could have posted "Hey, from my experience tonight cops are actually decent human beings like I previously thought and are just doing their job" but alas, that just wasn't the case.

I agree that the neighbor should have knocked on your door before filing a noise complaint to ask you to quiet down, but many people in this world are that lazy that they don't want to get up from where they're sitting/lying down to walk a short walk to their neighbor's place and be decent human beings and would rather just make a telephone call and get cops involved for such a minor thing as noise
