enough spawn for 2 monos?
    #16737252 - 08/21/12 05:16 PM (9 months, 23 days ago)

Is 4 quarts of Rye spawn enough to make two 30L tubs (13" (33cm) long, 11" (28cm) wide). If I were to follow Damion's coir tek which makes 10 quarts of sub, and use 5 quarts in each tub with 2 quarts of spawn (7 quarts total), would this work? It makes 3" total depth which isn't ideal (I was aiming for 4"). Strain is India Orissa.
Thanks :3

I have a 27qt tub, and I use 4-6 quarts of spawn when I fill it.
"Could" you make two tubs, with half as much spawn in each? Sure.
But that is going to increase colonization times and increase risk of failure.
So it's not ideal, but yeah, you could do it.

You make it all possible. Doesn't it feel good?

As long as your within 1:3 on your spawn ratio, you should be fine.  While 4" is viewed as ideal by most cultivators, you can get away with as thin as 2".  Generally speaking, the thicker substrate produces larger shrooms where the thinner substrate produces a higher quantity of smaller shrooms.  While colonization times will increase slightly, your also no longer putting all of your eggs in 1 basket.

2 quarts spawn to 5 quarts substrate is ok. Go for it.

Take Doc's point, though-- the more spawn you use the shorter the colonization time and the less chance of failure.

More spawn = better.
