Seriously though, good question. Answer above is completely valid, the patterns themselves are fractals, patterns of maths that are completely infinite..
I don't know what it's called when a human experiences them though, other than a 'trip'

I've made a few of these short animations using Mandelbulb 1.7, but I've never been able to upload them to YouTube. The file size has always been too large and been rejected.
Those who do these long animations must either pay or somehow decrease the file size...I dunno.  The rendering of these animations takes SERIOUS computer power and a shit-ton of time. Rendering even a short animation (at least in my inexperienced hands and with modest computing power) takes more than a day.
I do love to play with the program, though. Recently, I discovered an on-line tutorial for the Mandelbulb program which has been very helpful in helping me understand the various control features.

What is the general mathematical idea of creating 3-dimensional fractals? One would imagine that they would have an infinite surface (in the limit of infinitely many iterations).

This one is way cool. On shrooms one night as I lay in the living room in complete darkness I was thrust into my own brain. I watched it operating as I stood in the middle of it, it looked a lot like this. A different colour, but the same pattern.

Nah, all you need to do is get Quicktime pro and export your movie using .mp4 as the export option. You can fiddle around all day making the file sizes small..
