About 150 people were arrested and a large variety and volume of illegal drugs were seized Thursday through Saturday during a rock music event called Gnarnia the Festival at Beech Mountain Ski Resort.
The Avery and Watauga county sheriff’s departments, Avery County Municipal Drug Task Force, Banner Elk and Boone police departments, N.C. Highway Patrol and N.C. Alcohol Enforcement (ALE) filed about 300 charges, mostly felonies, and made about 150 arrests during the event, according to a press release from the Beech Mountain Police Department.
The press release said about 4,500 people attended the event, which was held for the first time in Beech Mountain.
“Huge quantities of illegal drugs were seized in the process, including cocaine, heroin, Ketamine (animal tranquilizer with hallucinogenic and memory loss effects), DMT (synthetic version of a South American shamanistic psychedelic drug), MDMA (Ecstasy), marijuana, hundreds of dosage units of LSD, bath salts, several pounds of psilocybin mushrooms, four large containers of nitrous oxide (laughing gas), hashish, and numerous prescription drugs such as Valium, Xanax, Suboxone, Adderall, Ritalin and Clonazepam,” the press release stated.
Capt. Jerry Turbyfill of the Beech Mountain Police Department said state and undercover officers made arrests where the event was being held and that county and town officers made arrests nearby, mostly at traffic stops.
Turbyfill said that although held at Beech Mountain Ski Resort, the event was organized by another private entity. He said Beech Mountain police requested assistance from other law enforcement agencies in advance.
ALE agents alone arrested 108 people on 258 drug charges, including 39 people on about 100 felony offenses, at the festival
According to an ALE news release, ALE agents focused on sellers, distributors and traffickers of controlled substances like LSD, psilocybin mushrooms, MDMA (Ecstacy), heroin, cocaine, Ketamine, marijuana and various pills. ALE agents also seized drug paraphernalia and cash.
Four men, from Arkansas, Florida, California and Louisa, Va., were arrested for trafficking in MDMA, cocaine, LSD or Oxycodone.
“Dangerous psychedelic drugs were being sold and distributed prior to and during the event,” said ALE Assistant Special Agent in Charge Brad Putnam. “Many of the arrests were made before the festival started.”
ALE Special Agent in Charge David Ashley said the agency wanted to keep controlled substances from being distributed in the area and prevent problems due to use of illegal substances.

It is kind of scary to hear about this. It really makes you wonder how all of these arrests happened so fast seeing as how they claim most arrests were made before the festival even started.
Was it heavy duty searching/checkpoint on the road into the festival or festival entrance? It sounds like they popped quite a few people with loads and loads of drugs. I would guess the people holding that kind of variety of drugs wouldn't necessarily be the ones going around and selling to individuals and getting popped by undercovers with fake dreads and crispy tye-dies. Who knows though. It just seems like a lot of activity in a short period of time. You would think word of a few busts would swirl around the camp grounds and people would cool it down for the weekend.. but 300 busts? holy fuck
Were any of you at this festival? I got a flyer for this festival and some camping neighbors of ours out in the midwest were raving about this festival called gnarnia. Said it was going to be an awesome chill weekend at the top of a mountain.

Close off all roads except one, narrow it down to a single file line, then just watch.
You wouldn't even need drug dogs, you could just sniff the cars yourself.

Damn i was thinking about going to that. glad i didn't now. probably would have been one of those kids. Boone isnt a place to be riding with drugs at. Every single cop is a K9 unit. Have had many of friends busted there.

 I was at Gnarnia and only saw 3 people physically arrested the whole time, they were near the main gates where the 2 cops I saw there were patrolling, I spotted 3 undercovers with the guys that were being arrested at once. I'm imaging it was a group of guys just all yelling out "DOSES! MOLLY!!" right at the front where the police were. The under-covers were super obvious, not dressed up as 'hippies' or anything, just guys in their 30's in blue windbreakers and walkie-talkies that looked like they weren't there for the festival if you know what I mean. Sadly, the festival had a lot of paranoid vibes, people were making up rumors and extravagant stories all weekend. it was actually pretty ridiculous. At the end of the first day on the shuttle bus back to the camp grounds I heard a bunch of paranoid lot kids saying anywhere from 400-900 people were arrested, 20% of the festival was arrested, the whole Atlanta family was raided and intercepted and arrested.
I only saw a few cars pulled over during the duration of the fest on the multiple levels of the mountain (3 or 4 cars) that I saw in between going back and forth (it was shuttle bused from parking lot, to campground, to stage on three different levels of the mountain). I saw one drug dog, a GIANT German Shepard who had got done sniffing a car.
How 150 got arrested I have no idea. By the sounds of it they were either being super sketchy and obviously doing something illegal or just had bad luck. There were no road blocks, check-points, narrowed down roads, or any monitoring by police while going into the festival the first day (from the main route anyway which I imagined the majority of the festival goers traveled). Just 2 patrol road cops directing traffic.
Personally I had a great time at Gnarnia and didn't feel threatened, paranoid, or scared at all (aside from all the heady organic vegan patchwork spunions that were passing paranoid/bad vibes everywhere with stupid rumors.). I met a bunch of great people, made some new friends out of state, and saw a lot of good live music, Beech Mountain was beautiful as well. My experience at Gnarnia.

Dude, to be fair, 150 arrested is probably the biggest arrests per capita at any festival in the US in the last decade. I can't remember a festival that had that high of an amount arrested. I can't IMAGINE the paranoid vibes, but trust me, there was good reason.

Peaceful noncompliance is the way for us to end this. None of the people arrested should show up for their court appointments. Make the bastards have to navigate their own nightmarish tangle of legal bullshit if they want so-called justice.

True, i'm thinking it had something to do with the location? Being a ritzy ski resort area for the rich in the South East. I know that 150:4,000 arrest ratio is pretty damn big ratio as far as festies go but didn't realize this may have been the biggest in the past decade.

cops were everywhere. ALE sting with 25 uc agents is why the numbers were so high. pigs were on a power trip, busting kids mainly under 25 years of age. easy targets all over the place all weekend. mainly got people who were driving. campground was 2 miles from stages, so you had to either drive or wait to ride a dangerously overloaded schoolbus.
not a ritzy ski resort town at all. probably one of the most redneck/poor people ski areas in the world lol. come back for winter to see all of the south's poor people skiing in jeans and camo.
the reason for the busts is the festival scenes growing reputation for drug usage, poor planning by the promoters, and an incredibly excessive and wasteful police force called the ALE.

Boone is historically a black hole for anyone holding any kind of psychadelic. Even on this forum you can trace back how many headz have gone down in Boone for L, and the others. I wanted to go so bad but didnt' because of this conspiracy theory i have. Boone has long been known on the road as being a mecca for people that love to buy psychadelics, so a lot of headz are always tempted to stick around a little longer after a show and capitalize. 6mnths ppl remember, the feds usually do things in 6month incremints, get out before the going get's sour,

i know this thread is old but i know quite a few people who were there, im told that they agents would pull people out arrest em, put charges on them, then put a wire on them and send them back out to get more people caught up, a couple bouncers even got arrested just because they wouldnt let the cops on stage. -.-
