CAN ANYONE HELP WITH THIS MONSTROSITY? (PICS)
    #16704153 - 08/15/12 01:40 PM (9 months, 3 days ago)

So, I made 2 monotubs (2q verm, 5q bird seed spawn, and gallon water) on 8/2, and I made another 2 on 8/4. I was going to unveil the first two on 8/12, and the second two on 8/14. When i opened the first two tubs to see if they were ready, I was punched in the face with a horrible odor and saw this:

I'm not so much interested in identifying the specific mold obviously, but what I'd like to know is maybe someone knows what happened? It was kept for longer than the 10 days, but it really did not look ready. I unveiled it last night, hoping that it was supposed to smell that nasty, but this morning when I looked at them, I could see green mold.

Is there something I did to make this specific whatever it is appear? I'd appreciate any feedback.

I don't see any mold.Smells are usually associated with bacteria.
Those monstrosities are little aborts. Put it into fruiting conditions and
see what happens. I would be worried about that smell though. Does it
still stink?

Yes, it's definitely nothing I've smelled before from something that ended up not being contaminated. Bacteria sounds about right, but also green mold showed up, too.

That's a good idea, to try to put it in fruiting conditions. I have 21 quarts of spawn still, so throwing it out isn't a big deal, but I still feel like it's a waste and it's worth trying something.

Most likely your spawn was contaminated. I would fruit them outside if there's mold on them and they're pinning.

:like:

Bury it about half an inch under ground...

Do not break up the substrate!

Cover with dirt from out side and leaves....water the area

I'm in Brooklyn and don't really have the outside/underground option. The best thing is I have a fire escape that leads to roof that no one has access to besides myself. Maybe there is something else to do?
