New Zealand Ovoideocystidiata - First fruits.

It's taken 2 and a bit years, but finally they've decided to fruit.
I have them growing in a supermarket basket I had laying around. The holes all around prevent the wood chips rotting out and keep things nice and airated.
It's still Winter here, but we've had unusually warm weather for it. Just thought I'd share
Peace!

If you let them drop their spores, New Zealand will be infested by Ovoids within 10 years.

Wow! Amazing work man ! I really hope these become established here in NZ, you should spread some mycelium randomly in a few woodchip patches to kickstart things

Nice one J.T, I bet there is an interesting/unfortunate story linked to the camera used for these shots which are really nice by the way:)

haha...that's great. This is like a continuing saga. Ironically, the original patch in san Francisco ran out of food and doesn't exist anymore and the weather in SF isn't quite right for ovoids, or only sometimes
but here's the mother patch in San Francisco around 2007-2008

Can you give us a few details on the weather you've had?
A few specific questions I have:
1) what was the lowest temperature you've had this winter?
2) when did those temps bottom out?
3) what's been the general average day/night temps?
4) what has the weather been like in the past two weeks?
Thanks!

Good job dude, ive been trying to get my ovoids to grow for about a year now, I only had a small amount grow but they came back ,every year if their spores drop they should re appear.
Its good seeing people trying to grow ovoids since not much is known about them

One more question... What type of wood are those chips? I understand New Zealand's native trees are pretty distinct from what we have up here on the top side of earth.

the ones in SF...well actually they are the same plant, just a different generation..
the chips in SF are something called "scotts sierra red mulch' which is really a combination of several wood chip species, hard and soft woods
these ovoids will eat almost any kind of hard wood except cedar, which is too oily and aromatic. they will eat any wood that cyanescens like, and probably even eucalyptus chips, since we know that p cyanescens has adapted to that pretty well in SF
they'll eat apple, walnut, pine, birch, fir, alder, etc, that kind of thing...
actually what is more important is to have a good small size cut so that it can help retain moisture..If the chips are cut too big, like 3 cm or 1 inch or bigger, then it's too airy, and dries out. Scotts is ideal because it's a finer cut, somewhere between large chips and sawdust (sawdust can be a little too fine - they need to breath air too)
it is quite a wide range of sizes and types of wood these can handle tho, just not too big or too oily and smelly wood
you can see from the first post here, JT > that the chips are pretty fine, not quite sawdust, but more like 1/4 inch or maybe 1/2cm cut...that's about right - just enough so it doesn;t drown under there

Haha yeah! The Nikon got run over by the house mate whilst I was away for 10 seconds :P Picked up the replacement on the weekend, so we're back in business
I was hoping you of all people would like my shots

Hey mate! Yeah not a problem!
1) The temps varied quite a bit, from really warm 18 deg. to 20 deg. days and lows of say down to 3 deg. The average would have been 14 deg.
2) They bottomed out always at night time, in the early AM.
3) The average would have been 14 - 17 deg.
4) The weather has been REALLY warm, getting up to 20 deg. some days, usually hanging around the 16 deg. mark.
From memory the chips were a combo of Oak and macrocarpa. These may be fruiting from the Oak and Inski thinks this is most likely.
Hope this helps
A massive thanks again for the props!
I hope I can continue to post pics for you all
Peace!! [BTW I am off to Vancouver at the end of the year/start of next when I sell my house. I will be lonely [haha] and would be keen to meet some people here if anyone's keen? ]
