I have around 40 cds. Still I'm always wanting one more. I even met the Great Man back in the early 70s. He's about my favorite American. (or was)
What's your favorites?
Mine change a lot but right now it's
1. Strictly Genteel
2. Uncle Meat
3. Broadway the Hard way
4.Waka Jawaka
5.Playground Psychotics

I really like Zappa. Unfortunately I'm not well versed in a good amount of his music. I really dig the Mothers of Invention a LOT though for all thats worth.

Only an minor one and not a Republican as some would wish. In fact he was highly skeptical (to say the least) of the social conservative platform.

The Mothers were amazing. I think Frank was just a tad hard on their musical abilities. I think musically they were wonderful. One of my favs is We're only in it for the Money.

Hot rats is excellent. If you like that you would most likely enjoy.
JAZZ FROM HELL
TRANCE FUSION
WAKA/JAWAKA
IMAGINARY DISEASES
and possibly
STRICTLY GENTEEL.

Zappa's one of the best imo.
My favorite album(s) by him are Joe's Garage Act I, III, & III. My second favorite is probably Fillmore East June 1971.
I also love Hot Rats (Already mentioned), Ship Arriving too late to Save a Drowning Witch, Shut up and play your guitar, and Overnight sensation.
Truly a mind blowing musician. Someone who had such a deep passion for music and he let it run wild through him. If I could write something that's even a fraction as good, I'd be happy.

Me too. Got started on We're only in it for the money/Lumpy Gravy, the 80's re-cut. From there it was Apostrophe/Overnight Sensation. Then I got really into the other two of the first three Mothers albums along with everything else shorty thereafter.
My favorites(other than the first three Mothers albums and Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation:
Sheik Yerbouti One Size Fits All Studio Tan Sleep Dirt Weasels Ripped my flesh Waka Jawaka The Grand Wazoo Roxy & Elsewhere(fun live album) Zoot Allures The Man From Utopia You Are What You Is
For Beginners I would recommend:
One Size Fits All Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation (two albums for the price of one) Maybe the 'Laether' box set or 'Zappa in New York' 'The Grand Wazoo' maybe, if you like instrumental fusion-y stuff We're only In It For the Money (worked for me anyway) You Are What You Is
Then there's the Baby Snakes movie. I think all Shroomerites should watch that as a rule.

Apostrophe and Joes Garage are the two that have been played to death on my system but his entire output is consistently hilarious!

Favs, roughly in this order:
Apostrophe Joe's Garage The Yellow Shark Baby Snakes (DVD) Hot Rats
I very much enjoy listening to interviews of him too. Always funny when out-intellects the square who assumes he's some worthless, 'drug-abusing' devil worshipper (or something to that effect).

No I have a friend who has 35 Zappa albums and Hot Rats is not in that collection. He's not that impressed.

I just got "Ahead of their Time" in the mail today. Just finished listening to it and was blown away again. The first 10 tracks are basically dialog live stage theater at the Royal Festival Hall, London England, 1968. From ll -20 mostly instrumentals with outstanding versions of King Kong, Pound for a Brown and The Orange County Lumber Truck Part II at the same concert. Very different type atmosphere than a US concert. Very quiet attentive audience. They laugh as a group and applaud at the end of the piece without any yelling or cat calls. Very good sound quality. You feel like you are right in the crowd.
A must have for any serious Zappa fan imo.

I'll check it out(Ahead of their Time) eventually. Though all the record stores seem to have liquidated their Zappa stock, I'm guessing the Family Trust is going to do a bunch of re-issues or something, so I'll have to adopt a new paradigm for further exploring the Zappa I have not yet purchased or even heard.
The great thing about Zappa live albums or compilation albums is that even if they contain a song he's already released it will be a different version in a completely different style. And Zappa kept his live group so tight that the live shit is always premium quality, and they usually have all sorts of playful banter and extra content and stuff.
Speaking of how tight the live group is, did you know the guitar solo on Inca Roads on the original album version(One Size Fits All) was actually recorded live at a concert in Finland and then mixed into the studio recording? You wouldn't know it but Frank could pull that kind of shit off.
Shroomerites should generally like that song, given the Nazca Lines-related theme. And it's one's of Frank's best tunes and solos methinks.

Most of Franks CDs aren't found in mainstream music stores. I buy used or new on Amazon and the family just did reissue 13 CDs on July 31. More to come soon.
I never thought when I started exploring the non radio CDs that he produced that it' would open up a world of music to someone who had become a little jaded to what I was listening to. If you would have told me I'd be buying over 40 cds in just a few months I would have called big time bullshit. I've never estimated the cost cause I don't want to scare myself. Some were over $30. But I don't regret any of it. I've already got my moneys worth out of them.
The music is totally positive vibes and energetic and yet deals with the bullshit prevalent in this culture.
