What mushroom are you growing now in the heat?

We in the tropics are limited to a few mushrooms and we always dream of growing what I see you guys grow. Our max. is 92F and min. of about 70F all year round. Some of you are even hotter than us now. So perhaps if you share what you're growing ATM you'll help us tropicals widen our choice. Cheers everyone!

I remember you once wanted to try Agaricus (but you seemed a bit impatient at the time!!):
Go for A bitorquis or A blazeii. They might even work on your hulls & poo.

I've been reading a lot about warm weather ABMs... greetings from south FL by the way- me and some friends have been thinking about fruiting ABMs alongside veggies in a large-scale organic garden. We have unlimited equine manure (with a lot of straw mixed in) as well- I'd love to hear how others have done this in similar situations.
I'll be following this thread closely

Golden and Pink Oysters would both do well at those temps. Calocybe indica may also be a good choice. I've never grown it, but it's supposed to be tasty with a good shelf life.

Thanks Darkman for reminding me. yes I wanted to grow agaricus because it's stupidly expensive here. I was put off because turning wet straw is hard but if it grows on hull+poo. I'll find some ABM. What are you growing in S. Flo funguy? Woodland, oysters and calocybe are all I grow. You ought to try Calocybe for your summers. It's an amazing mushroom. It's easy, pretty and hardy.

I believe ABM to be the easiest Agaricus because it is both a primary and secondary degrader. It's also very fast growing. I would suggest doing trials outdoors.
Bitorquis is a harder nut to crack. You would want to limit to temps to within the 80's, plus you need to take the time to learn about "Mushroom compost." You need to know the C:N ratio of all your inputs (either from internet or from lab analysis), then calculate to start of with a ratio of 25-30 and end with about 20. As you have found out, the structure of compost is also a factor, but by the time it is ready you shouldn't be able to recognize any of the original ingredients.
When I started playing with agaricus I had a worker and we still spent half a day turning over the pile, but now I am alone and I do it before eating a late breakfast!!! Lots of practice makes perfect (plan for several tons of compost over a few months for this practice).
Then you research; casing, irrigation/watering/misting...
Another one is Shiitake 75, this one fruits up to the 80's as well and usually fetches a good price.

I'm not currently growing anything... but I'm planning on contributing my ideas and hands to environmental groups in my area, as well as friends' organic gardens- one of which is 5 acres... that has a lot of potential. I was also looking into elm oysters as well, as I've heard they'll do ok in this region- thanks for the reassurance!
Calocybe sounds interesting... back to the books for me!

As long as it cools down at night and you have a semi-shady spot, many shiitake strains will fruit well in up to 100f. These are some of mine from recently. The creek provides humidity and all the vegetation provides shade and humidity. RR

Awesome RR- most of what I have read on here about outdoor ABMs, etc, has your name all over it. Good looks on the outdoor shiitake!
Amanita- I've spent every summer in northwestern NC for the past 10 years, and yes, it's been a scorcher! I feel like the only difference between here and there during these months is the RH- it rains at the same time every day and stuff, although the average RH is much higher here but it's hotter there
so basically I'm gonna follow everything you guys say so I'm fully prepared next summer

Wow RR, that's great! Ok, will add shiitake to the list. Although our night temps are in the 70s. Will that work? Amanita, really, steel blue fruits at those temps? Add that to the list.

So does that mean that S75 does not fruit around 10C? Or what is the range?
Thanks.

I'm in New England, but it's a particularly hot summer. Daytime temperatures are into the high 80's F. My pink oysters (Pleurotus djamor) are loving the heat and humidity! Overnight, they are going from pins to fully grown clusters.

Lions mane grow very well in the summer heat. I once put some in a plastic shed sitting in pretty much summer desert heat to see if they could take it and they grew very well. Could just be the local strains I grow here though. I didn't try any from more cooler climates.

Excess heat.
Pinks may be able to survive higher temperatures, but they taste horrible in my opinion. I won't even attempt to grow oysters in the summer for that reason. There's a few shiitake strains with a wide temperature range, S75 being one of them, and A10 from aloha being another. Oysters suck in the heat, even if they do grow. RR
