Spawning with Wet Spot, any success?
    #16646235 - 08/05/12 10:58 AM (9 months, 8 days ago)

Hello!

So, I found out the bags of pre-sterilized grain were contaminated with wet spot.
One bag started to smell sour and wasn't really growing.
The other bag was doing really well! I'm in the middle of it's fourth week.
I think it's been solidifying, but it doesn't seem to be spreading much further - I think the grains it is not colonizing, has a bit of wet spot that's preventing it. The bag does not smell sour at all!

I feel like it won't be able to colonize much more unless it takes over the bacteria...

I have a spare small tub anyway, so I was thinking of possibly spawning to bulk (manure/straw) and tossing the obvious wet grain.
There could be a chance they'd still make it? Is it too soon that I try this?

And is there anything I could do to help give the spores an advantage over the bacteria ? perhaps keeping the temperature on the low side?
Anyways, I am probably going to try anyways, but I wanted to hear if anyone else has had any success with this!
Thank you in Advance for you time.

In my experience isolated bacterial contams are usually safe to just remove. I would guess however that this depends entirely on what kind of bacteria is involved, and success is never guaranteed. Some bacteria stall in growth as soon as they encounter mycelium, but some will eat through the spawn like a plague given they have enough oxygen.

Just give it a try and hope for the best! Unlike with most molds, bacterial contams don't necessarily mean the cause is lost.

This is good news! I know I am a beginner, and this is my first grow - I learned A LOT more from the moment I made my first myco related order, up until now...And more or less, I was able to start a simultaneous grow with some more corrections that seems to be doing well.

I was just looking at the bag today, and even though this is just the start of the fourth week, I just felt it would have a better chance in the bulk sub. So I went ahead and did it -
had the extra stuff now anyway, I hope it does okay! I'm guessing the spawn I used and separated from the bacteria was not fully colonized however, the tub is a mini mono - any idea how long I should let it incubate for?

The other bag seems to of stopped growing really, I'm probably gonna just bury it. Also, my ferret got into the garbage and spilled some of the contam grain onto the floor! It's not near my work room, but I'm worried - I can't use bleach on the carpet, what should I do? :frown:

I've had success, but it is clearly a risk. Remove the contaminated part if it doesn't completely colonize.
