 Coventry gang jailed in £500,000 cannabis haul

A GANG who stashed almost half a million pounds of cannabis have been jailed for a total of 16 and a half years.
Police seized almost 49 kilos of cannabis in vacuum-packed bags at a property in Essex after tailing a car from Coventry in February last year.
Five men were sentenced after admitting their part in a conspiracy to supply the class B drug.
Coventry gang leader and former soldier Robert Lines, aged 47, of Potters Green Road, was jailed for a total of four and a half years, and James Smith, aged 49, of Wareham Green, Walsgrave, was sentenced to four years.
They instructed Coventry man James Ainsworth to take the drugs to cousins Ricky Clark and Anthony Byles in Nazeing, Essex, where they were stored in a shed.
Officers traced the gang members after they followed Ainsworth, 46, driving back from the house in Essex via the M1 in Hertfordshire.
Ainsworth, of New Green Park, Wyken Croft, who was made redundant from Peugeot and later became a tree surgeon, was jailed for two years.
Clark was arrested with cousin Byles who were linked to the plot through telephone conversations about the drugs.
He also admitted possessing a gas canister found in an old fridge in the front porch of his home and Lines pleaded guilty to possessing 25 grams of cocaine.
Cousins Byles, 49, of Hobby Horse Close, Cheshunt, was jailed for four years and Clark, 35, of Wareside, Ware, for two years.
At St Albans Crown Court on Thursday, prosecutor Neil King said: “This conspiracy involved three men from Coventry – Lines, Smith and Ainsworth – supplying cannabis to cousins Byles and Clark. The drugs were brought down by Ainsworth on the instruction of Lines and Smith to Byles’ address in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.”
Mr King said: “The crown does not know the roles but we say Lines and Smith had a leading role. Lines had a large home with a new kitchen and £7,000 cash was found in his car. Ainsworth was the courier acting at Smith’s directions.”
Mr King said the cannabis was “good skunk cannabis” worth £490,000.
Defending barristers for the five gang members said they were hard working family men who had fallen into a bad circle of people higher up the drugs chain, who never got their hands dirty and have never been caught.
Judge Marie Catterson, sentencing, said: “It was a commercial operation dealing in highly valuable illegal drugs for a commercial profit motive.”
