Concerned about cobweb in BRF jars
    #16638515 - 08/03/12 09:18 AM (9 months, 14 days ago)

Hey everybody I am definitely a newbie to all of this. I just started my first grow a few weeks ago using the BRF method. I inoculated 25 jars and most of them look great. However there are a few (6 at the very most) I'm beginning to seriously worry about. The other day I was reading a post regarding what BRF cakes should smell like. I learned quickly that they should not smell like much of anything and especially not sour. I uncapped a few of the jars that smelled funny and I found what appeared to be the start of cobweb! I thought cobweb was rare in jars! Can somebody please tell me if this is indeed cobweb? If so what should I do. I know there are 1,000,000 other posts on this site like this but I just wanted to be sure. Thank you!

Unless the dry verm layer got wet there won't be anything growing on it, the mushroom mycelium can grow through from below. That's definitely mycelium in the second pic. Not sure about the first it's kind of blurry.

The sour smell is from bacteria. You might notice sections of the jar aren't colonizing as well from it. If the jars smell I would just toss them.

Kizzle, thank you so much for your information! I would like some clarification on something you wrote. You mentioned that bacteria could cause the myc. to not grow in certain areas of the jar. Are you referring to the jar in the third pic, or just any jar in general? It doesn't smell, should I still toss it?

Just the ones the smell. If a jar stalls for a long time though it could be contaminated even if it doesn't stink.

Kizzle you are the man. I got rid of the jars that smell (which only turned out to be 2 of them). I also sprayed some H2O2 onto the jar in the first pic. The alleged cobweb disappeared almost immediately and it sizzled for quite a while after being sprayed. I hate to do it but if you're willing I have 1 more question. If the cobweb returns, and I'm sure that it's cobweb, should I toss the jar, or keep spraying? Last question (for a while) I promise. Again I'm a rookie and  even though I read something in other threads 1,000,000 times, I don't know that that information in particular necessarily applies to me. Thank you again Kizzle!

Yeah if it sizzled and disappeared it's probably cobweb. Is your dry verm layer getting moist? That could be the source of the bacteria too if it is. If it's fully colonized you'll probably overcome it by birthing the cake and completely removing that verm layer. If the cake is not fully colonized you might have a problem you can't fix, because a compromised dry verm layer lets contams colonize though it.
