    #16626801 - 08/01/12 07:43 AM (11 years, 7 months ago)

so I left for 2 days and came back and there are these tiny flies on my cakes and around the FC/walls - I put a venus flytrap there, but other than that, any advice? Am I fucked? will my mushrooms still grow? Can I still eat them? it's the third flush so no biggie I just wonder why it's happened now...

I like Schultz Houseplant Spray, in the green bottle.

Usually when I see gnats I've got some fuzzy green mold somewhere.
They seem to find it pretty quick.

And I think they breed in sink traps, if you have an infestation run some lye down the sink.
They certainly can breed in houseplant soil as well, if you have plants check them carefully.

Wild mushrooms are infested with all sorts of organisms. They're kinda gross.

RR answered that but I forgot what he said.
Pop over to the Main Search Page: http://www.shroomery.org/forums/search.php
Select 'one result per thread' and 'sort by date, descending'. That will quickly get the current info.

Yes, yes they are. They almost kreep me out a little bit.  I always hold my breath cutting them up, becuase I always find little buggers giving birth in the stems or some little slimy mongrels wrapping up to stay warm.  BLech... Just popped open and looked under a cap and saw 20-30 little larvae munching away.  Yuck.

Word of advice. Always wash/brush before you eat.  Depending on what they are some people even soak for a short while in a brine to get rid of them.

And we're very, very pissed off."

Talking of wild mushrooms, I noticed a wild mushroom outside yesterday and the ants were eating it. They were chopping out chunks of the top and carrying it away..it was almost gone in a day. A strange white mushroom with a ribbed top

I've had them infest some casings before, but was surprised when I actually got rid of them all by chucking the whole martha (which I usually do for one reason or another a couple times a year at least). The main problem, as has been stated, is finding all the sources of them. Sink traps and garbage bins being the worst, potted plants as well. I recently brought a new plant home that had them in the soil. It is now outside and although I havent seen a single one in the past 2 weeks I am still going to purchase some fly paper about a week before I case my rye. You should be able to find it at any grocery or hardware store for around $5. Fly paper has a scent that attracts them to a sticky surface. I've never used it before, but I figure it would be a good precaution anyways. Kill the flies as you see them, but what's killing one fly when you have 100 eggs in your sink. And electric fly zappers do not work in my experience because the flies are too small. Good luck.

bleach works as well as lye down the sink, and i would assume is easier to find in your closet.

I just got some gnats around my FC's and i put the fly trap tape above all fc's. if your lucky and spot em before they infiltrate, this will work well.

shit good looks doc, ive been wondering where all these gnats been coming from and i just cleaned out the frigde there still here... must be the sinks!

i used to work in kitchens so i shoulda thought of that

Citronella works well. Diffuse the oil in the room, not necessarily right by the fc. They'll soon find somewhere less offensive to go.
