 Partial shade for cacti?

I know its recommended for seedlings and smaller newly rooted cuttings (mine are 4-7") to be in partial shade for a little while. However, I am not sure what partial shade really is. Currently I have them in a shed that has a good many windows and is bright enough to have good visibility inside all day, but the plants are typically not in the visible "sun beam" of light at all. I only have a few spots to place my cacti around the house. If I place them in the front of the house, they will get good light from about 6-10 then they are shaded by the house the rest of the day. If I put them in the back of the house they will be shaded all morning and get good light from about 2-7. Both spots are protected from water with an overhang, and a big reason these spots are ideal for me. Is morning or evening light better do you think? I live in central PA, so I'm guessing the sun isn't quite as intense as some places. Thanks as always for the help!

i think morning sun and afternoon shade is better.
i have my globular cacti under shaded cloth.
but since you live so far north i dont think the sun would be so intense.

I have some trichocereus and globular cacti that are a little over 1 month. Should I get them out in the light for a few hours too, or keep them in the shed? They look pretty healthy.

The trichs would like a fair bit of light. If inside, I would have them in as sunny a window as possible. If outside (recommended for summer), I would transition them to full sun by first putting them in an area outside where they will get a little direct morning sun, but afternoon shade, and gradually introduce them to full sun. In some climates they won't take full sun, but up here in Washington where I live, they love it once they get transitioned.

Even very bright areas indoors would still be considered partial shade. I would personally put them outside if you can. They can handle full sun up north. But the key is to slowly increase the amount of light. Don;t just stick them from inside to full sun or they will burn. It's just like a person going outside in the early spring. Regarding the globular cacti, if they are only 1 month from seed I would wait to put them out. I recommend artificial lights for the first year simply because they are more predictable. If they are mature and you mean you bought them a month ago, then you can acclimate them out.

Thanks for the quick responses everyone. I moved my 3 rooted trichs to the front of the house where they will receive morning light until about 10:30 am. These guys were already rooted and I believe they were in full sun before shipping. I gave them a week to heal over before moving and watering them. I know I don't have much of a summer left here, so I don't think I will be moving them back to full sun this year. My 3 unrooted trichs will stay in the shed and hopefully put out roots before I bring them in for winter. I also have 5 week old globular and trich seedlings; these have been doing well in a window that receives similar, but likely a little less light than the rooted ones. Cacti are seriously addicting by the way...

I know, I have to stay away from Ebay. I just keep clicking Buy It Now and I am running out of pots and places in the yard to put them in the ground. Lately there have been some deals that I just couldn't pass up, rare cuttings, bulk cuttings, and just plain beautiful specimens.

I agree 
Mine will never get to go into the ground here, wrestling with them to move them when they are 6ft tall should be fun. I have a way's to go though my tallest one is 7 inches  I have done a good bit of lurking on ebay, but luckily I haven't scratched that itch yet.

even up north UV can go all up into 9, probabyl more. intensity doesnt seem to matter so much about latitude, more you climate and pollution.
most cactus greenhouses are setup with a shade cloth rail for when its sunny. I us eit when we are forcast lots of sun. its also good if you get relly dark clouds for a long time then sun, whip that shde cloth over them befor they get toasted.
thought for trichs that are rooted, i dont bother.

Yeah, once they get a nice root system, they'll stay pretty green even in full desert sun. But they can get seriously fucked up if put into full sun without proper acclimation. I use a black netting for my smaller cuttings during the summer if they are in full sun.
