 Lake County investigators confiscate designer drugs, guns, $100K

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office officials said today that investigators confiscated 22 kilograms of the popular "designer drug" K-2, guns, heroin, cannabis and almost $100,000 in cash following a three month undercover drug investigation targeting retail stores.
"What it really means is what we've done for the community," said Chief Wayne Hunter, of the Lake County Sheriff's Department. "We took 22 kilograms of K-2 off the street. This is the new plague upon our land. This stuff is geared toward children, kids."
He said the sheriff’s office executed six search warrants and made buy at various businesses in Lake County during the investigation. K-2, also know as "spice" and a slew of other street names, has generated controversy across the Midwest, Hunter said.
"It's sold under the counter," he said. "It's not legal. It's a controlled substance. From my perspective it's far worse than smoking marijuana. The kids that are smoking K-2 are smoking chemical compounds."
Police said search warrants were served on at least six Lake County businesses in the last week said and various amounts of drugs, cash, weapons and property have been seized by investigators.
Investigators allegedly found 1,894 grams of K-2, in individually 568 wrapped packages in the Ma & Pa’s Grocery store at 37737 Green Bay Road in Beach Park. Sammer Z. Kartoum, 31 of the same address, has been charged with felony unlawful possession of controlled substance and unlawful delivery of controlled substance, police said.
"It's mostly people under 23 that are buying it," Hunter said.
He said the investigation continues, and more felony charges are expected against other store owners in the next few weeks.
"It's a very complicated process," he said. "We have to do three drug buys from every location in order to ask for a warrant. In addition, because it's such a new drug, it's a designer drug, we actually have to collect lab reports identifying this substance as being named in the controlled substances act, before we can act."

Man-made does not necessarily mean it's more dangerous than nature. He's not comparing weed to bathsalts in terms of safety. He is just saying that they are both chemical compounds, and criminalizing something simply because it is a chemical compound regardless of safety is ridiculous. Nobody is defending bath salts, they are just rightly pointing out the errors in your logic, that because something is new and synthetic it is bad. Since you are old, and afraid, I'll break it down for you. "bath salts" are not a drug. It is a branding for various substances, almost always beta-ketones. Beta ketones are the amphetamine skeleton with an oxygen added on the beta carbon. This changes the NE/DA ratios and goes from more efflux to re-uptake inhibition. This skeleton, much like amphetamine, can be modified to change it's activity, and skirt laws. That's all bath salts are. Nothing to be terrified of, no hysteria and ignorance needed. The media frenzy around bath salts now is almost all BS, scare tactics, and fear mongering. Much like reefer madness in the 30's, LSD in the 60's, PCP in the 80's, meth in the 90's. Drugs are not inherently evil. Ignorance and stupidity are.
* before you dismiss me as a crazed bath salt swilling cannibal I shall add I don't enjoy beta ketones, much like I don't enjoy amphetamines. I just don't like misinformation being spewn by terrified old men. But alas, such is amerika. .
