 I need to buy a Printer.

It's been about 8 years since I've bought a printer. I'm in need of a printer since I haven't had one for a few years now, and I'm re-enrolled in college. The thing is, I don't really know what to go with these days. There are many new brands, many better than others, there are also the old brands.
My main problem is I don't want to get Anything made by HP or a company that uses a single cartridge for tricolors. these cartridges are the worst things in the world. You run out of a single color and you've got to toss the entire cartridge.
I've been wondering if I should look at an Epson or a Canon, but Epson doesn't seem to have any affordable printers on newegg. And Canon, some of their cartridges look expensive as hell.
What should I do? What are your guys experiences? Can you refill a canon cartridge at say an office max or depot?

I've got a cheap Samsung B&W laser printer I'm pretty happy with, I think it was like $50. The quality difference from inkjet is pretty dramatic, the print looks just like a book you'd buy in the store. I haven't had to get more toner for it yet but I'll probably try to find a place that refills the cartridge. I think Samsung has some fairly inexpensive color laser printers too.

Just print at the library. I can't imagine you needing to print in color for class and the ink plus paper gets very pricey. My university allowed printing for 11 cents per page. That seemed very reasonable.

Having to drive 40 miles (there and back) out of my way to print a document seems a little unreasonable.

What about a laser printer? I guess if I am mainly printing documents and not photos, would a laser suffice?

I think it's a good choice, the print quality looks professional and you can get one pretty cheap.

See, that's the thing, I live way in the southern suburbs, the closest library is the local County library and that's in downtown, so that's about 12, 15 miles away. There's kinkos, but I have a habit of having people proofread and correct on paper for me. Hard to circle things on an email.
I tried school before without a printer, and it really sucked. Waiting in line for 20 minutes for a printer really sucks too.

just buy the artisan 800 thats what i have maybe try amazon, then buy this

a product like that is superb since in today's market you can buy a
replacement printer for the cost of a new set of cartridges

if all you need is to print papers for school check out craigslist you could find a sufficient one for dirt cheap. I saw a couple with scanners and everything for $20-30. But if if you have the money might as well get something new.

I bought a Brother HL-2280DW Monochrome laser printer for $129.99, and a toner cartridge for $30 on Amazon. Should be here in 6-8 business days. The toner cartridge says rated for 700-1000 pages.
I was reading reviews on everything from epson to canon inkjets, and nothing can do over say, 400 pages. Most say around 200 pages per cartridge. So considering some of these cartridges on the inkjets are 25-50$ a piece, I'm thinkin' I'll just keep my color printing to online services who use light and photographic paper.

Canon. Stay away from HP, their ink always runs out super fast.

I fucking despise these machines, I fantasize about taking a baseball bat and breaking several printers with it.
