Dehydrating things.
Say you find a bushel of peaches at the farmer's market for $10. They'd spoil if you tried to eat them all fresh, or you'd get sick. But slice them and dry them, you could be enjoying delicious peaches all winter long.

Here's what I read.....you can start with fan drying but that is only going to get you down to the humidity level in your house - mine is around 55% - it will be maybe 10% in Phoenix and probably 100% in WA state..lol. Then you can use a food dehydrator set around 110F and after that finish off in a sealed box with a desiccant to get the last few % out. There a 3 types of desiccant out there. Some are rechargeable - google it. Then you can store your produce in a sealed container with a small bag of silica gel desiccant in there.
If you don't have a food dehydrator then you can go straight from the fan drying to the desiccant box but you will load your desiccant faster and need to reacharge it more often.
Correct me if I am wrong

So you can get them cracker dry as in completely inflexible, able to be easily crumbled into powder.
Why would you want them cracker dry?
So you can get accurate dry weight and so you so can store them long-term without them getting moldy.
If neither of those are important the fan alone should be adequate.

u are well aware that i have already managed to get my shrooms perfectly cracker dry by the method previously explained
so why would i want a dehydrator?

I don't think you do but you are going to go through more desiccant and it may take longer but I am not sure on that.
Just get them bone dry or they will go moldy

can someone please tell me if this is a passing phrase, or should fully dry shrooms actually be as dry and brittle as crackers?
the shrooms ive had drying for almost 48 hours are obviously much dryer than when they started, but they are still bendable and a little soft in places
heres how they look:

can someone please tell me if i should leave them for as long as it takes until they are actually 'cracker dry'? or is this about as dry as they are going to get?
also, i have bought some airtight glass jars to store them in when the drying process is done. whats the best way of storing them in those jars?
i read that they best way is to chop/grind them up, pack them tightly into a jar, then put the jar in the freezer... is this best practice?

i havent used a single pellet of desiccant browser
the shrooms i currently have are bone dry. next time im gonna do the same, but instead of using the fan for 2 days, overnight will be fine. then 10 mins under a recently heated grill and they will be cracker again. problem solved. no wastage, no unnecessary objects, no hassle. simple... just the way i like it

you really should use desiccant to store though. if you're going to put them in an airtight jar there could be even the littlest bit of moisture in them and then they will mold. it's always smart to throw some in when storing

If your stash is fairly small you can use a few of those little desiccant packs that come in aspirin, vitamins, etc... check out your medicine cabinet!

Hee.Hee. This is getting interesting. I won't go on one of my tangets but man.. Some people... Mouth Shut... Good for you Apprentice.
As for drying. I use a "Card board" box, with a fan. Use that for about 24 - 48 hours then place the mushies in a "paper" bag and place on top of the fridge. They stay there for another day. This is the consistency that I like them at. I then bag them from this point. They are not cracka' dry, some are, but most are at the stage right before. I don;t like taking them down any farther than this for many reasons. I have stored them like this for long periods of time and have not had anything go wrong, ever. Well, my dog ate some actually.
