Going to try casing my tubs like this
    #16581404 - 07/24/12 07:54 PM (9 months, 22 days ago)

My monotubs have seemed to have humidity issues for a while now (e.g. mostly side-pinning, dry & cracked looking on top of substrate), so I've been wanting to try out adding a casing layer.  I plan to do everything the same as I always do, except when I get ready to switch to fruiting open up the tub and spread just enough of my casing mix to completely cover all the mycelium.  My casing mix will be as follows:

5 parts verm
5 parts peat
1 part crushed oyster shell
.5 parts gypsum
1tbs hydrated lime

Add enough water so that it drips a few drops when I squeeze the mix, and then pasteurize it for 2 hours; let it cool, then spread over the substrate.  Fan & lightly mist daily.

How does that sound?  Should I "patch" the casing layer as mycelium starts to colonize it?  Any other pointers?

I would suggest find out the cause of your humidity issues and correct it. Are you misting enought. Maybe add more water before you pasteurize. A casing layer is an unnecessary step for cube if the tub conditions are optimal

That sounds about right.  Thin is the key word, its very easy to add too thick of a layer.  I dropped casings all together for monotubs.  I found them a little bit tricky to get just right, and not really worth the extra time and effort.

Remember that the monotub is providing it's own humidity.  If you have too large of a tub and not enough substrate that could dry things out quicker.  Make sure you tape up the holes of your monotub while colonizing as that helps retain moisture for when you intend to fruit.  Run a humidifier in the room you're fruiting the tubs in to raise ambient humidity.  Gently mist once or twice a day.

I honestly have no idea what's causing the humidity issues, and I fan and mist at least daily.  Also, the substrate is at field capacity when I put the tub together, but I've also tried adding more water anyway.  I've seen quite a few threads where people case their tubs of multispore cubes and have great results, so I figure it can't hurt to try it.

Nope, cant hurt to try. Hopefully your humidity issues wont dry out your casing too much. You don't have a fan pointed directly at your tub do you? Also what kind of holes do you have in it? How many? How big? Is there polyfil in the holes? Do you know temp in your toom? I know its a lot of questions I'm just trying to figure out why it would dry out . . .

Most likely its the ambient RH of your room.  Try a casing by all means but try putting a humidifier in your grow room too.  I have a thermometer/hydrometer that i like to keep in the grow room.  I use a vaporizer humidifier, it only raises temp by one degree in the room.  It varies depending on size of room and time of year but i would for my set up run the vaporizer 1day on 1day off.  It kept ambient humidity in the 60s.  It cured my side pinning problems.

Do you use a black garbage bag liner?  If not you should.

THAT combined with low ambient humidity definitely equals dry sub.

It's a small room and I leave the ceiling fan on medium; the tubs are pretty much directly under it.  The tubs have two 1.5" holes on each side at substrate level, and one 1.5" hole on each of the other sides (located near the top of the tub); I stuff the six holes on each tub lightly with polyfil, and have tried using tighter polyfil to increase humidity.

Unfortunately, I have trouble keeping the room under 80-85F degrees, so I'm sure the tubs are warmer than that.  It's been a hot summer, and will continue to be for a while yet, and I have no way to lower the temperatures any further until Fall.  The room is basically the size of two regular bedrooms; it measures 20' x 12' x 8' or about 1900-2000sqft, so I figured a humidifier wouldn't do much and would only exacerbate my heat problem.

buy a cool mist humidifier 80-85 is ok, cubes are tropical.  I just had an outdoor bed fruit over 2oz after a month of hundred degree temps.

Another nice thing about a humidifier is your ability to fan more.  You want as much fresh air you can give while still maintaining humidity.

I might try to get a couple of cool mists when I get some cash.  I say a couple because the room is basically two rooms; in fact, it was two rooms but at some point somebody knocked out a wall and made it into one room with double the size.  I still plan to try out casing.

What about the ceiling fan above the tubs being on medium speed?

Yea sounds like humidity of your room is low, you must live in a dry area . . .

I would say don't have the fan right above it.  And try to mist it more often as long as drops don't start collecting on your sub. Whenever it starts to look dry give it a good misting

I like an oscillating fan.  I crank up the humidity in the room, mist tubs daily as needed and have the fan on constantly.  The fan is on low and about 10ft away from the tubs.  Sometimes i'll put the fan on high and point it directly at the tubs for 30 mins for extra air exchange.  Its sometimes good to fan till things dry out a little and then mist more.  Evaporation is a big pinning trigger.
