Cheap living for young couple?

Not sure if this is the correct board to place this in- If it isn't, please let me know and I'll delete it.
My (long distance) partner and I are planning to move out in 4 months or so. Together, we might have about $6k then- Not much, I know.
My other half lives in central NY and I live in Cali. We both fell in love with Denver, Colorado, but I would like other options. Sorry if I come off as ignorant, the weird shooting rampages that sometimes happen in Colorado is getting me paranoid. Also, since Denver is a a blooming popular city, I feel like living expenses will rise up.
Anyway, are there any alternative states that are similar, urban-ish, and not so expensive to live in? I compare Denver to a cleaner version of San Francisco.
A little about us: We're still in the process of figuring out what we want to do in life (or what career, rather). My boyfriend will be receiving his degree this summer and i'm still working on mine.
The reason why we want to move out is because we desire an environment that is supportive and enriching, also the fact that we need to grow up since we are both young adults (21). He likes recording arts/music, and I like cooking and graphic designing.
I'm not too materialistic; a standard apartment will keep us content- two bedrooms if it's affordable.
We're not too fond of socializing (introverts), but I think it'd be healthy to fit in some interaction with other people- so any places with local events would be kind of cool. I don't think we've explored enough outdoor activities together, but hiking sounds like a good idea. Gardening is something I've wanted to get around to.. what else.. oh, and I like living near major cities (i.e i live in the bay area, SF is an 1 away).
I was thinking about Columbus, OH- I've never been there though.
Ideal rent price: 600-700.
TL;DR: What states are good for a young couple with a really, really tight budget?
Thank you in advance.

If you guys move overseas to say some South American countries you could live quite comfortably with the money you make. In fact my dream is to eventually attempt to live in Chile or Venezuela while still getting paid in US dollars. Money will last quite a bit longer.

Rent of 600-700 a month will only get you 6 months of living on that savings.

I live in the Denver area, If you want to live cheaply move to a suburb at first. Loveland is probably the cheapest city as far as rent goes and the commute into Denver isn't that bad. Longmont is even closer but im not sure what rent is like.
Best of luck.

I feel perfectly safe in CO, but the fact that this state has had a couple of major shootings is a little wired. Honestly I feel safer here than i did in my previous state (Arizona), people are certainly much friendlier here but that is all relative to what you are used to..
It just depends on what your moving for... You can garden, hike, record music and do graphic design nearly anywhere. I ended up here because of school, but if i was just hoping to move somewhere for the hell of it, it probably would have been to Oregon. I was looking into a little town called Corvallis a while back, its close to the coast, Portland, and Seattle, and Norcal. As for rent you'd have to do your own research.
Maybe you should look for work in a few cities and let a job be the deciding factor.

Hi-
Move to Ithaca, New York!!!
College town with tons of kids and cheap houses in outskirts of town.
In the middle of wine country, Cornell University and Ithaca College so all sort of jobs and education available. Little crime and tons of community passions. Big city mixed with small town values. Good God you could be living next to a Nobel Prize winner and never know it!!!
Does your other already live in Ithaca? If so just come and join us!!

anon 4, unfortunately i'll still be working on my degree... so i'd be looking for a minimum wage job although my partner is finishing his degree, he's kind of unsure about what career he wants.
and yes, i'm weirded out by the colorado shooting things, but colorado is still my top choice as i said earlier

Anywhere in the midwest is going to be cheap/good value, but its also got a pretty poor job market in many areas. Michigan, illinois, ohio, indiana has many medium sized towns that are good value.

YO! OP, Im in a county that has the major town named the "safest" place in the USA to be. Its nuts around here. Not to many minorities, but those that are here are accepted. And all kinds of other stuff. If I were going to pick a place to live it would be in the outlying area of where I am now. PM for details

you can pull off a two bedroom for $700 in Denver...you won't be downtown downtown but you'd be within walking/biking distance
for $700 you could also probably rent a small house in the hood
