has anyone been bitten by a black widow?
    #16546834 - 07/17/12 10:54 PM (10 months, 27 days ago)

There was one in the top corner of our front door. When I came in through that door I felt something in my hair and thought it was a moth because we get tons of those, so I just brushed it off. Once I got inside I looked back to see what it was and there was this big black widow dangling right where my head was and it must have been attacking my hair. But I'm curios how bad a black widow bite is.

I know a guy I worked with, an old retired navy guy, we worked on white sands missle range together.  We had a tracking mission at 2am (space shuttle) from our site in the desert.  He went out in the dark to the porta-potty to take a shit and a black widow had set up shop in the bowl.  He got bit on the nut sack.

He was in the hospital 3 days, and everyone thought it was funnier than shit.  (except him)

No, but I worked with a guy who got bit by a brown recluse on his rear. Didn't believe him so he showed me and there was about a fist full of flesh missing from his ass. Didnt get to the hospital for 8 hours. Sounds like serious business

A small little gal I know was bit by one, didn't really do shit to her.

Your not going to die, the worst is feeling a little sick, at the least, absolutely nothing.

A friend of mine picks apples on the summer and she got bit on the shouldet one time.  she said she thought it was just an infected mosquito bite at first, she got kind of a fever and pain/itchy bite for a couple days and that was it, no permanent marks or anything.

most people dont die from black widows unless you get bit in a critical spot and cant get to a hospital in time.

The black widow spider produces a protein venom that affects the victim's nervous system. This neurotoxic protein is one of the most potent venoms secreted by an animal. Some people are slightly affected by the venom, but others may have a severe response. The first symptom is acute pain at the site of the bite, although there may only be a minimal local reaction. Symptoms usually start within 20 minutes to one hour after the bite.

Local pain may be followed by localized or generalized severe muscle cramps, abdominal pain, weakness, and tremor. Large muscle groups (such as shoulder or back) are often affected, resulting in considerable pain. In severe cases, nausea, vomiting, fainting, dizziness, chest pain, and respiratory difficulties may follow.

The severity of the reaction depends on the age and physical condition of the person bitten. Children and the elderly are more seriously affected than young adults.

In some cases, abdominal pain may mimic such conditions as appendicitis or gallbladder problems. Chest pain may be mistaken for a heart attack.

Blood pressure and heart rate may be elevated. The elevation of blood pressure can lead to one of the most severe complications.

People rarely die from a black widow's bite. Life-threatening reactions are generally seen only in small children and the elderly.

knew a girl who got bitten by a brown recluse. it fucked her up really bad. she showed me the bruise which spanned about 8 inches tall and nearly completely wrapped around her torso.

she had to go to the ER and was on some heavy antibiotics or something

Most purported brown recluse bites aren't really from brown recluses they tend to be very passive as well as limited in geographical range contrary to popular opinion.  Not saying that girl wasn't bitten by one.

actually, she never saw the spider, that was just the diagnosis of her doctor, so you could very well be correct.

where I live black/brown widows are very common. In fact I could probably find a dozen on the brick walls outside my parents house right now

Yeah that's really the issue, People rarely have the sense/ability to capture the spider which just bit them making ids impossibru.  As creepy as brown/black widows are, they don't instill half the torment that wolf spiders do in my psyche

No, they can bite but they have pretty weak venom and they rarely bite humans, only when provoked or defending IIRC.

They are just creepier than a motherfucker.
