He y'all. I just cut some fresh wood a week ago. These SweetGum tops are turning black. What is going on here plus it is spreading to other logs. Will the logs still produce Shiitake Mushrooms?
Will these Shiitake still grow

Looks like a foreign purple fungus invading.
I knowwith smaller logs people often seal the ends to prevent this exact thing happening. Only time will tell if they will still fruit. That might just be a surface fungus.

if there a week old try dry stacking it in a sunny spot to let them season some, plus a week old is too soon to inoculate trees have there own fungicide that keeps working awhile after there cut down, if its just a surface thing it may die off from the trees own defense or from letting the logs dry for a month or so in fact the first time i bought dowels for logs it said let fresh wood season 6 weeks

Thanks for the response.. Some of the logs are resting for 3 weeks and still end up with these spots. It is definitively something airborne as i just brought some oak onto the property and after a week resting i see the ends starting to turn black. I am desperate to find out what this is!
Also when i cut the log circular i see the stains on the next cut. If i cut the wood long ways like in half i see nothing. I will upload more pictures.

Is it possible to over season them if they're dunked before inoculation? The ones I have access to are a bit cracked from drying but no mold or rot and even the lichen is dead. They were cut about six months ago. Do you think the cracking could become an issue because contam spores have access to the center?
@hophead, I personally wouldn't use my dowels on any infected logs, I think growing with logs is way to much labor for the return. It's not worth risking failure. (I'm assuming you didn't inoculate yet?) I'm curious to know what that mold is too.

I cant say for sure i havent been cultivating long but the wood still has good moisture after six months its surely not dry seasoned yet, and contams id say pluggin logs is as close to natural cultivation you can get so i think your good id plug em, I dont think contams grow good on seasoned wood, but to be safe use oysters for there quickness to colonize. Thats what I have to say. Others here know much more than me though get a few opinions
