i've been lucky enough to never have had a filling. i hope my ex wife consults with me about real gold if my either of my children ever need a filling.

IM not sure I buy the whole "Its the fillings" defense. Im as hippie as the next guy. I dont like fluoride in my drinking water, im against pharmaceuticals, I buy organic fruit, but I cant wrap my mind around it. My buddy had his teeth COVERED in amalgam fillings. He had them switched recently and has had nothing but problems with the tooth colored fillings. He wants his metel ones back, and he seems just fine (apart from his teeth feeling like shit now). Im glad I only have 3 amalgam fillings, and I will pay the extra if I need anymore. But Im sure glad I can have modern dental work, as the third world option isnt pretty. They pull your teeth out from a shady cart at your local market, or the fucking BURN the infection shut with no painkillers

It's a permanent retainer. Keeps your bottom teeth, the ones most likely to go back to looking ugly, from shifting after braces.

I'm sorry but I don't feel that stereotyping a hair color and some dentists off-hand remark about how a 2D shape looked 3D (of course we know it's 3 dimensions, but it doesn't always look 3 dimensions) is a good way at proving why you shouldn't trust dentists.
There are a lot of dentists who do know the dangers inherent in their profession. I highly suggest shopping around for a dentist and not assuming that they're all like minded. There are plenty of dentists who refuse to put mercury amalgam fillings into your mouth because the residual Hg ppm that gets put off from friction is enough to evacuate an entire warehouse. There are plenty of dentists who refuse to give their patients fluoride treatments as well. Both of which I agree with.
Root canals are another story though...the dentists I've found who are against them always seem to recommend pulling the fucking thing which isn't an acceptable solution to me. Done correctly and actually warranted, root canals are perfectly fine. It's up to you to make sure your dentist is gonna pack the cavity with calcium hydroxide for a week or two so infection doesn't set in, and to make sure they cap your tooth with a crown so it doesn't crack a few months later. Ask questions, don't just go in trusting any random dentist and you'll be fine...the whole profession isn't shot by any means.

They're exposed to mercury vapors on a daily basis. Also being a dentist sounds like a shitty job. Nobody likes the dentist.

Gold is a solid filling material. What I'd do though is get your children's blood tested to see what material would best suit them based on their biochemistry. Everybody reacts differently to different materials.
