How does one become a great philosopher?

I have always wondered how some of the great philosophers and speakers acquired such skill at expressing there ideas, such as Terence Mckenna or Alan Watts. How did they gain such control over the art human language. Was it a fuck load of writing and philosophy classes, natural talent, or the Eros?

Drugs.
Lots and lots of drugs.

In all seriousness, I too wonder this. Alan Watts is fantastic and I am continually amazed by his control over words and meaning.

No, you have to be a philosopher then you have to do something notable. So become famous for your ideology.

I personally don't believe fame is what makes a great philosopher. I believe its the ability to convey a message. To express yourself in the most beautiful of ways. Even this is not enough alone, but to be able to get others to understand what your talking about. The control of language is crucial. How one gains such control is the true question.

A mix of the three. With emphasis on the fuck load of writing (and reading, I'd say, instead of philosophy classes).

he did come up with some interesting ideas, and i love "Plants of The Gods"
i think the question "How does one become a great philosopher?" is possibly the best loaded philosophical question in existence.

Your focus seems to be on the external expression of philosophy; what about the internal process?
(I believe) You must take care of your mind. Be very aware of your thoughts. Feed it well (be diligent with permitting certain thoughts to exist). I think you must enjoy solitude (uninterrupted thought). You must have tenacity with your cerebral endeavors and be able to hold a thought without branching off tangentially and losing yourself. Needless to say, you must have the ability to make accurate observations. And, as mentioned, you should read a lot and have knowledge of what great minds before you have uncovered, as well as a decent vocabulary. You need to really understand what words mean.
At the end of the day, I think the essential element is a love for thought and delving into deeper levels of mind, as well as an insatiable curiousity for life and unraveling the unknown.

It comes naturally for some people. Reading a lot of philosophy will definitely help. Participating in online discussion probably helps because it gives us an opportunity to voice our opinions and consider others'.

it's not an overnight process; philosophers are extremely learned, articulate individuals. anyone who can speak with authority about human affairs typically has above average intelligence, expert level knowledge of intellectual history, world history, philosophy, logic and theology along with a good base in other liberal arts. scientific aptitude helps as well. philosophers are wordsmiths, so superb language skills are a must with mastery of the written word being primary and oratory skills being secondary. most importantly though, having a deeply contemplative mind that can pull all of that knowledge together in order to formulate and defend arguments that attack the philosophical question (that of being) is what makes great philosophers great in the eyes of their followers.
oh, and i disagree with the claim that mckenna was not a philosopher. i think he fits the bill for what i described above and definitely has his place among other great thinkers of our time.

Yes but, how does one gain these skills you have pointed out? some have mentioned reading, some writing, some say discipline and some solitude... Surely there is more to it than this. Or is it really that simple?
