Ok guys need your help. I have some brf jars colonizing but one smells sour. It don't look contaminated and has rhizomorphic mycellium growing. Should I toss it. It would be the 4th jar of 20 that's had to be thrown out. The others had black patches in them. Thanks folks.

Toss it. The smell is from bacteria. They are microscopic so sometimes the smell is the only indication it's there.

If the jar has no smell during colonization BUT smells like a shroom by the end of colonzation, keep it, otherwise toss it. If the jar has any color on the mycelium other then blue, and if the blue stains a Q-tip, its bacteria or mold, toss it. The only color in the jar should be white rhizomorphic mycelium and if its simple bruising, blue.

I think we'll toss it thanks to kizzle's advice. But I'll wait till tomorrow to see how many people agree. But it'll be tossed regardless.

The Q-tip test is pointless, simply because bruised mycelium can also rub off onto the Q-tip.

Glad there is someone who takes the time out of their day to help out the noobs such as myself and actually knows what they're talking about. I have read countless guides and more our out of date and debunked then the actual helpful ones. I seen your post about your contributions to this forum and it is a great feeling that there are people like you out there, unlike many people who seem to come here to get what they need and are never heard from again.
I for one will be a frequent member here despite my "beginners luck" first try. I to want to help others along their journey through mycology. You have helped me since day one and I feel more confident in growing shrooms, so I hope one day someone can thank me.
To keep it on topic, sorry about the disinformation, good luck on your future grows.

Thanks for the kind words.
No need to apologize, I've done the same thing a few times. We all just have to strive for perfect technique and knowledge, whether such things are attainable or not.
It's important to keep this forum healthy, meaning we all must do our part to limit the spread incorrect information(incorrect information is kind of like a contaminant of sorts, weird isn't it?). That responsibility falls on all of our shoulders.
