Good spots to camp in northern California?...

That's a very broad question...
I know the state pretty well, I've been through almost every region and most counties within it...but when it comes down to specific camping spots, my knowledge isn't to deep.
I am trying to plan a camping trip with a small group of close friends. I am looking for a place in northern/central California. Somewhere between Big Sur and Ukiah, and between the coast & Nevada state line. Some areas I have in mind are around Big Sur/Ventana Wilderness, and on the Crest/Eastern side of the sierras between Sonora Pass & Bishop. A place that would be relatively easy to get to with a small SUV, perhaps a small hike at the most (I usually wouldn't mind, but I'll be with friends that aren't down for hiking everything in).
An area with water would be nice, but isn't crucial. An area where there might not be any other people camping close by, or encountered at all, would be preferred as we will likely be partaking in some "thangs", privacy would be nice. (Basically, a place where we can trip and have a peaceful & quiet setting)
The time frame I'm looking at is sometime between August and late September.
...I think that's it.

maybe check out starter hikes? in my opinion a hike would be a much more enriching experience than simple camping, theres nothing like going to new places each day, being on your feet with all you need on your back, of course with some buddies. simply idyllic in my opinion, hope this helps

I agree 100%. When I am out and I don't know anyone, I go to the nearest place with internet and check google maps for the nearest national forest.
