Roaddogs three bucket worm casting and coir tek
    #16508717 - 07/10/12 12:09 PM (10 months, 9 days ago)

Ok her it goes Roaddogs three bucket worm casting and coir tek. Here is the beginning list of supplies

1) 1 brick of coir

2) 1 quart of worm castings

3) 2 quarts of vermiculite

4) 1 cup crushed oyster shell, 1/2 cup hydrated lime ( both of these are optional but preferred)

5) watter

Here is the list of basic tools needed to complete this task

1) 3 buckets of the 5 gallon size and 2 lids.

2) meat thermometer.

3) large stock pot.

4) measuring device, by volume.

First off, take  your coir and place it in a bucket pour in 1 gallon, and 2 cups of hot boiling water. Place lid on bucket, and allow to cool for several hours, set to the side for later use.

Next you will need to fill the second bucket with the other ingredients, namely the, 1 quart of worm castings, 2 quarts of vermiculite, 1 cup oyster shell, and the 1/2 cup hydrated lime. Now  you will need to fill the remainder of your bucket with about a gallon and a half of water that is exactly 180 degrees. When you add this water to the room temperature, ingredients, you should end up with a temperature  of 150 degrees or so. If not add some more hot water, but do not exceed 150 degrees. You will use your meat thermometer to achieve this goal.place lid on bucket.

Next Take about a gallon and a half of hot boiling water and fill the 3rd bucket, it should be less than a quarter full, Now Slide the bucket that has the worm casting vermiculite mixture in it , in to the boiling hot water bucket. what this dose is help to keep the pasteurizing temperatures of 150 of the worm casting mix steady for the next hour. This is my basic bucket in a bucket pasteurization system.

Now allow everything to cool to room temperature. Mix the bucket of coir into the worm casting and vermiculite bucket. Mix really well. Now you should have all the ingredients properly mixed together. You will need to remove one hand full at a time, and squeeze the excess water out. This is screaming important. I like to squeeze every bit of water out that I possibly can. Now dont allow the water to run off, by using a strainer, you must hand squeeze the water out.

After you have squeezed the water out  Your ready to fill trays, and begin your spawn runs.

As I mentioned above the crushed oyster shell, and the hydrated lime, are completely optional. I prefer to use them, but they will do fine without it. My reasoning for using them, is the crushed oyster shell adds calcium, and the lime changes the PH, to make an environment less conducive to contamination.

Any comments?

I use the boiling water for the coir to merely hydrate it.  I then pasteurize all of the substrate materials together on the stove top using my meat thermometers to keep the water in the pot at about 150-155F and to gauge the substrate materials from the center.  Once the meat thermometer that's reading the materiuals states 130F, I start the timer for an hour and a half.  I also use powdered gypsum at about 3% of substrate materials for the addition of calcium and sulfur instead of crushed oyster shells.  I only use hydrated lime when making casing layers for like Pans. or something.
