Why do Babies Laugh ?
    #1651676 - 06/21/03 07:35 PM (11 years, 1 month ago)

Any research done on this ?
anyone manage to kidnap a few little ones
take em apart an figure this out ? sorry... that was gross
seriously tho, I was in the waiting room a few
weeks ago and this lady was carying a little
bundle of joy, he stared at me expressionless for
a while and then after deciding something that only
babies would know, he burst out into the most heart
warming giggle...
yeah, I was thinking of asking her if she'd let me have
him for a few days while I performed some tests on him, but
something told me that would be a bad idea

As we begin we start out as a child of the cosmos, why do we like the simple things, the color, the sounds?

yup, and there was genuine unadultrated joy in the
little tots eyes...he was a happy little soul, and
for no apparent reason.

if I was extremist id say its cause of what problems of our modern society do to people, and baby have just not experienced unjustice.
Ofcourse I like our system and so id say its simply, cause they?re happy to see people. Most children are shy and like to play hide and seek, when you sit in the bus near them.
They?ll look at your for a second and then look away, only to look at you again when they think your not looking. I think they are just interested in other people.

Babies laugh and act what we consider to be cute so we don't eat them before our dogs in a survival situation.

Dogomush is right, my mom always use to say that my cuteness kept her from killing me. Now that I have a masculine ugly man face, I can defend my own, so whenever she has bad thoughts about me i just wish her into the corn field.

This one paradoxical line in an Incubus song brings an idea...
In "Echo" the chorus goes:
Could you show me dear...something I've not seen?
Something infinitely interesting

We constantly seek things new and interesting. Boredom arises from the predictability of situations we have already been in... Things we have already seen.

I just think those lyrics are paradoxical, because for a majority of people that's the way it works - It's interesting, and then it gets old.

hehe... he was kinda plump and tasty lookin
seriously tho, I've noticed that kiddies
smile/laugh/display intolerable affection  when they
get attention. If u smile at em, or show them any kind
of affectionate attention they seem to get happy (strange ).
I havn't studied kids when they're not with people (I'm
not that kinda person) to know enough about makes em happy
when they're by themselves (if anything at all).

babies dont play hide and seek because they are shy, they play it because they have really bad memories and vision, and it seems like you dissappear when you "hide" and you when you re-appear its really amazing.

anyways, I think that it all comes down to conditioning, the reason adults dont laugh as much is because they are used to their surroundings, theyve seen it all and become conditioned in order to survive. if everything was amazing and hilarious all the time, do you think an adult could function well enough to feed its laughing children? maybe not.

but if they get too cold, they stop laughing and leap
out their 17th floor apartment, bringing survival to
an impetuous stop...

Laughter is tension-relief. Babies, having no clue what's going on around them (even less a clue than we do), which I think would build a lot of anxiety/tension, laugh a lot  or cry or squeal or heh whatever

They could also laugh because they see us doing it.

hmmm... there's a point here, even in most animals the young
ones seem to frolick, play and generally be happier than the
older ones who seem more serious. I guess the frolick and play
is an evolutionary need to encourage curiosity and develop
survival skills. However, in some species the cheerful
playfulness seems to persist into adulthood - e.g. pooches.
They're just amazing animals, never seen one depressed or
one who wouldn't cheer up when given a bit of attention and
affection.
