Im not sure why the top turns blue. Perhaps you bumped it when dunking? Perhaps the humidity is lower at the top of the cake? Whatever the case, bruised cakes still make dank shrooms!

Just keep the temp steady, keep fanning and misting and wetting the perlite...if the conditions are good enough the cake can heal itself. Ive always seen some cakes bruise like that and I usually dont worry about it.

Growing Since: August, 2008

Latest project was a multi-spore rye spawn with some Golden Teachers. I inoculated on 7/10 and saw first signs of growth on 7/15. On 7/27 my jars were 15% - 30% colonized so I shook em up. 8/4 I mixed my spawn and sub in the monotub and 8/29 I harvested the first flush. Just under 4 ounces dry in 1 month 19 days! I had an early contam so on 9/4 I dumped my contam and spawned my "backup jars" to the monotub. I harvested the first flush 9-26...drying...dunking...

Best tip for newbies:  Waiting sucks...don't do anything drastic. Ask questions...the jerks will be mean but there are cool shroomerites who understand where you're coming from and wanna see you succeed!

would making the light cycle longer speed up the maturation?

If so would it harm them to switch from 12 h to more light?

I dont use lights of any type...just the ambient light coming through the windows is fine....it shouldnt be in direct sunlight, just a naturally well lit room in a corner somewhere. Mushrooms are not photosynthetic so they dont gain much energy from the sun. They do use sunlight as a fruiting signal so you cant grow them in the dark.  If your light is causing the fc to dry up or get too hot, youll have fruiting problems...keep that on check. 12 hours is fine, Id consider trying out natural light though.

That's kind of what I'm getting at. Every one is making a big deal out of it on this forum lately but I've grown them in the dark, in ambient light, under one and two full spectrum tubes. I see no real difference.

just stack them on the others ... put an inch of moist verm on top of the original ones to seat the new ones on ... if you got mush growing off the top of the old ones just put the new ones on the bottom the same way ...

got some nice riz on that middle cake ... should fruit nicely ... actually they all got nice riz ... should have some nice cakes ... good job :thumbup:

This is the one teaxas cake I didn't dunk. The fruits really sucked the moisture out. I'm printing them and the cake is soaking now. Your cakes are coming along great.

@OP

It looks like you've got no holes in your FC, and also like your cakes aren't getting enough air.

Why is the top bruising blue?

The top is turning blue because the abundance of "arial myc" or hyphae  reached out and colonized the verm you rolled in. Your RH or FC humidity has changed and now there is not enough water in the air for that myc to keep thriving, which is a good thing. You dont want your cakes to "puff ball" because they will yield less and become vulnerable to contaminates. One possible cause of this is that the humidity of an FC with freshly dunked soaking wet cakes will be well over 100% humidity or very close to it.
