Possible contamination
    #16489860 - 07/06/12 11:54 AM (11 years, 8 months ago)

Just checked on my cubes this morning and saw white fluffy stuff on the vermiculite layer(2 days after dunk and roll)

It is pure white yet looks slightly cottony.

I'm mostly worried because it appeared fast(appeared in like a day)

It doesn't look like its on the mushrooms themselves yet, but if it's cobweb mold I'm still worried

I'll post pics in a couple hours but if it is cobweb mold can I get rid of it or should I throw these cakes in an outdoor grow?

If it's cobweb mold it can be treated by spraying with h2o2(hydrogen peroxide). Cobweb mold is the only mold we can actually defeat in mycology that I'm aware of.

I'll be able to tell from a clear picture if it's cobweb or not. The way you're describing it, it sounds like mushroom mycelium.

Don't go tossing or spraying your cake until we can identify it.

Here's a picture for you guys. Thanks again for helping. I love how quickly you guys respond on here, much better than other forums I've been a part of.

On another note, my pins are looking good(At least to a first time grower)

If that picture isn't clear enough or has bad lighting I can use my photography camera when I get home from work

I was expecting to give you a definitive answer, but it's actually hard to tell. Another picture would be helpful and help paint a more accurate picture of what I'm looking at.

I'm leaning towards mushroom mycelium, personally. I've seen mycelium behave in this manner while in a high humidity environment.

If it is cobweb it's treatable with a spray bottle of h2o2 but I'd wait until you post another picture or until someone with a better eye, like Roger Rabbit, comes by and gives you an opinion.

I've tried but can't seem to get a better picture. The growth in question is pure white and appears rhizomorphic at this point, so is it safe to assume it is mycelium?

I think that it's mycelium based on the picture and your description.

should I lower the humidity or is this a good sign? I was concerned from the beginning about not having high enough humidity

Edit: I'm actually going to try to get a better picture as some of it does look rather wispy. Also, would mycelium be on the base of the mushrooms themselves? There's large white clumps at the base of the stripes of a few mushrooms

There's no such thing as too much humidity. You should probably increase fresh air exchange though which, depending on your FC design, may lower the RH some.

Yes

I would assume so. If it is cobweb it will grow very large very fast so it won't long to know for sure.

Well it's been almost 2 days since the growth appeared. If it was cobweb it would have taken over the cake by now, right? It's barely grown since I noticed it

Edit: I decided to spray with h202 just to be sure. The stuff melted but not completely, it just kind of shriveled a little. Does that mean it was myc and not cobweb?
