A teen who ate mushrooms and drank a tea made from the fungi shot himself in the forehead so he could wake up from a nightmare he said he was having while awake, sheriff's investigators said.
The strange incident occurred Tuesday. Deputies were called to Florida Hospital DeLand at 5:54 p.m. Tuesday where they found Steve Tilbury, 17, with a .22-caliber bullet hole in the center of his forehead, investigators said.
Tilbury told investigators he and some friends ate mushrooms and drank a tea made from the substance Tuesday afternoon. His friends left his house shortly after and he fell asleep.
"Tilbury said he woke up and it felt like it wasn't real," deputies wrote in the report.
Tilbury told investigators he felt like he was awake in a bad nightmare and could not escape from his house.
"Tilbury said he thought if he shot himself he would wake up from the bad dream," investigators said.
The teen told deputies he walked into his parents' bedroom and got a .22-caliber rifle. He then went back to his own bedroom, sat down on his bed, put the butt of the gun on the floor, removed the safety and fired once into his own forehead.
"He said after he shot himself he didn't wake up from the bad dream," the report states.
Tilbury tried to clean the blood that got on the carpet, wrapped a bandage around his head and walked outside. He saw a man who he asked to take him to the hospital.
A deputy asked Tilbury if he wanted to kill himself and he said, "No, I just wanted to wake up from the bad nightmare. I am happy and I love my life."
A deputy collected the bullet a doctor removed from Tilbury's forehead.
Tilbury's mother, Mary Wilson, was reached today but declined comment.

Whoa what the fuck?? So he was tripping on shrooms, shot himself in the head, and he was still conscious enough to clean up the blood from his bullet wound, walk outside, and ask someone to take him to the hospital?
...all while having a bullet in his head? 
I imagine being conscious while having a bullet in your head, while being on shrooms at the SAME DAMN TIME would be one of the most surreal experiences a person could possibly have.

I have so many questions...
I would imagine he had the biggest fucking headache of his life.
Did he not remember taking the shrooms? Wouldn't he have clued in to the fact that the "dream" was him tripping?

The gun either must have been a paintball gun, or these damn cops are spicing this shit up for making the substance look bad.

Can't trust anything out of Florida.
But I do have a friend who was shot in the forehead with a .22LR and didn't even go to the hospital.
Skull is too thick there. Bullet probably didn't get the brain at all.
Probably bled like a motherfucker though.

I have eaten 5 or so grams of cubes and fell asleep while watching tv(I was drinking a few beers down) when I woke I was seeing colors, nothing made since to me. I couldn't understand for the life of me why everything was so fucked up. Mind you, I have tripped more times than I care to remember. So I really think that waking up into a trip really does fuck with you a bit. I was only 12 min or so until I came to and remembered why I was tripping and from that second on the trip was just a normal trip.

Who drink a Mushroom tea and is so "WHATEVER" about it that falls asleep ? i mean when im waiting for my trip... im soo excited. every single time !!!

UNLESS he was pranked by his friends ( that gave him the tea without him knowing what it was ) this story has no logic, to me at least.

you can bounce a 22 long round off someones forehead if it hits in the right spot. people survive gunshots to the head on occasion. I remember seeing a rum running documentary on the boat "The Black Duck" and apparently one of the crew was shot through the head with a large caliber round from a coast guard boat and lived for at least a few days perfectly conscious. If he had shot himself through the side of the head, it would have been another story, but a bullet can pass through your sinus cavity and separate your lobes where they connect without damaging the brain.
