Okay - what is this? Supposed to be PE

Hey guys, so AFOAF started growing these guys from a MS syringe to LC to Grains to this tub. Grew a couple strains simultaneously and might have mislabeled something. But this is his first grow after a couple failed cake attemepts, and he doesn't really know one strain from another.
Ideas?

Oh and while we're at it and I got the pics up, why is only part of the top layer pinning and the rest has like spiderweb mycellium growing?

Not sure but it doesn't look like PE. MS PE usually has blobs on the first flush. So you will probably be able to tell which one is PE once it starts to fruit.

That's normal. Pinning on the entire surface is hard to get. Especially with MS. It's the will of the mushrooms.

Hey thanks for the reply. I'm actually leaning towards this being mislabeled on the MS syringe, rather than when the LC's were made. I think it's definitely a cube though. Would you say Isolates are more likely to get blanket pinning?

Yea it's a cube for sure.
Depends on the isolate and how well you can maintain perfect pinning conditions.
Cubes don't need a casing layer but it will help pinning.

I kinda did like a mini casing layer thing, as per Damions Coir Tek. I think that helped. So stoked to have these grow though, bulk seems to be working out waaaaaay better than cakes for me.
Excited to try again with an isolate! What do you recommend casing with?

We'll know soon!
I'm going to guess mazapatec for the hell of it. Stem and cap look the same.
GT is in my avatar.

I did a search for golden teacher pics, I think your right. I checked out what GT pins look like and they are basically identical to how mine looked. I guess my caps will open up eventually, because initially I discounted that possibility because the caps looked wrong for GT.

There is no way in hell that we could ID a Cubensis strain, with very few exceptions. You can sometimes figure out the strain if you have an albino or a PE variation, but other than that, you're just guessing.

QFT
The extra layer of coir on top doesn't do anything for pinning since it's nutritious the mycelium will colonize it rendering it useless. The "frosting" layer is more for keeping exposed grains to a minimum.
Casing layers can vary but for the most part people use 50/50 peat/verm with a touch of lime.
I use Miracle Grow with high peat content then add verm and lime. It's just easier for me since the places around where I live want way too much for peat.

When I've used 100% horse manure substrates in small monotubs I get hundreds of pins strewn all accross the surface. So far it's always been with MS. Lucky, I guess.
