Im not sure if this is the best forum for this, mods feel free to move.
I am thinking about taking a year and joining an exchange program to study in Australia, or possibly even getting my entire degree over there. A question i have though thats kinda hard to research, is what the drug culture is like there? specifically sydney if you can get that specific. and if you wanna go into more depth as to what the police are like, and just how the culture is in general as far as tolerance and draconian type laws. i just watched a few videos about dispensary raids and police brutallity here in the states so im kinda on a anti america bender right now.

They're all illegal.
We have some pretty far reaching analogue laws.
That being said, there's drugs everywhere.

Aus (sydney) is filled with drugs, mainly Methamphetamine. But the laws are strict, read up on google

I live in the state of vic, and have not been to Sydney for a long time, before i ever even tried alcohol, so i can't comment on the drugs there.
Please correct me if i'm wrong about this: JonnyDeformed says they're all illegal and i will admit that i've observed strict drug laws compared to some other countries but i do believe DMT is still legal in every state but south Australia?
I don't know about cops in other area, but when it comes to psilocybin mushrooms, i'm pretty sure the cops in my area (country town in Vic) wouldn't have a clue what to look for. Cannabis is overlooked by some unless you're dealing it; i won't comment on anything else because i although i participate in some drugs, i do not generally purchase or associate with others that do drugs.
(Just for the record, that sounds snobby, but is not intended; because i don't buy drugs, i don't meet others who do them, also i'm quite humble in these particular enjoyments; and the other people who'm i have have other similar interest with don't generally do any drugs except alcohol.)

thanks guys  everything helps at this point. How is the attitude of the police? In American its a very "us vs them" metality, the police are becoming more militarized every day and there are videos where they refer to civilians as sheeple. I find this very disturbing, and am hoping that its not like that down in Australia.

well i live in sydney and where i am, in the western suburbs, people are scared shitless of lsd, mushrooms, dmt anything psychedelic, everyone smokes weed and most people are into E and speed and meth... its so fucking sad.

Australia has really expensive drugs, tabs of acid go for 20-30 usd each, MDMA aka pingas are very expensive too. Herb is the only drug that is the same cost in USA, but USA has higher quality.
Aussie clubbers like meth and GBL. I am told there is really good south east asian heroin, but the prices I heard were very high, I saw a few people nodding out at kings cross and town hall train stations.
Alcohol use is more common in OZ than USA, even though OZ alcohol is heavily taxed. A lot of students drink bagged whine, mostly goon but there are better brands for a few dollars more.
Someone told me that in OZ the police do not need a search warrant for drugs, so don't sell.
The women and (guys I guess too), are very good looking in Sydney, and you feel safe in the city even late at night. I did not have any police encounters in my 3 years in the cities north shore.

that doesnt suprise me, the higher cost of drugs that is. its still good to know though. luckily my decision doesnt depend on drug prices haha
ya ive noticed how beautiful the woman of Australia are, its off topic i guess but how do they feel about American guys? or does it even make a difference

Sydney's drug laws are harsh that been said the police do not really care about weed if you are with holding an amount bellow 16grams you are let off with a warning and if you exceed 3 warnings you can face fines and possibly jail. But drugs are everywhere, just go to the city and The Cross  . Although Sydney is known for its use in Methamphetamine. Police are out to arrest dealers more than the users and if you are under the influence of any drug other than alcohol they will most likely search you if you have nothing they just tell you to go home or leave the area. My motto for the night drop/smoke whatever you have before entering trains as there are lots of undercovers and once you have nothing on you, you feel safe knowing nothing can go wrong

all great info guys! much appreciated! now if any of you have any opinions as the what the best college in sydney is (both in regards to accademics, location, the deal) i would love to hear those as well. i know this has totally derailed from the main topic, but i might as well milk all the info i can while i have your attention.

Too bad you're not coming to Melbourne. Psychedelics are everywhere. Not sure about Sydney, but Melbourne has quite a large bush doof scene. Pretty much every weekend people will go deep into the bush to dance for the weekend and do psychedelics. I go to most. I would be surprised if you couldn't find pills at clubs like Revolver either. But yeah, just find the most notorious clubs for the drug scene in Sydney and you shouldn't have a problem.

well Melbourne is still on the table, Sydney just happened to catch my interest more readily. just to make sure were still on the same page, doofs are like raves right? and if so a rave in the australian bush sounds amazing!

Yep, its a rave. And they are incredible. Not sure if there are much up Sydney way, but all around Melbourne you'll find them. Some coming up in Sep, Nov, and onwards include Strawberry Fields Festival, (met my girlfriend there, amazing 4 day bush doof). Shine on, Earth Dance, Rainbow Serpent. Then heeps of local psyheads put on mini doofs with 100+ people out in Gippsland, an hour outside melbourne every few weeks. It's all on facebook so keep an eye out  .
Also i would choose Melbourne over Sydney any day. As pompous as it sounds, Melbourne is much more sophisticated than Sydney. The people, the cafes, the atmosphere. Sydney is incredibly busy and touristy. I just got back from Sydney last week and couldn't handle it. Don't let me put you off though, its a great place. Just not for an extended period of time in my opinion.
Also yes, your accent will ensure you fuck loads of woman. Like any place, we dig American accents
